The Rocking Chair - More Than Just a Chair

The joys of a rocking chair are many, quiet joys though they are. As technology continues its constant onward march, some people still remember the peace and simplicity that comes with making a rocker a part of every day life. Some might think rockers are only for old people, but in truth, anyone who sits can gain some benefit from using this type of chair. That's because rockers are all about motion- not the crazy motion of long distance travel or freaky dancing, but something much more subtle, a gentle back and forth that may seem unremarkable to the naked eye. In truth, however, these motions can have a rather profound physical and psychological impact on us as humans. Sitting for long periods in one spot is likely to make our bodies stiff and our minds a little crazy, but sitting in a rocker keeps us engaged and our bodies are constantly moving, constantly adjusting. The fact that these movements and adjustments are slow does not really matter, because we repeat the movement so much. But sit in a rocker for an hour and sit in a normal chair for an hour- I bet you will come off the rocker feeling refreshed and rested, while your body might revolt before the hour is up if you're sitting in the regular chair.

Those who already own a rocker or two don't need to be told of the wonders of this humble type of furniture, but for those of us who have yet to make a rocker a part of our lives, we might benefit from a little information regarding rockers. The first thing to know is that there are rockers to suit all people, even those who find rockers a little hazardous due to the potential for crushed toes (these people will want to go with a glider rocking chair). Wooden rocking chairs are the most popular rockers by far, but there are also wicker rocking chairs as well as plastic rocking chairs. Most people will prefer natural materials, but artificial ones like resin wicker and plastic can make good outdoor rocking chairs that are better able to cope with direct sunlight, rain, etc. When buying a rocker, make sure to get a good feeling for the chair by sitting in it and just rocking for a while.

One of the lesser known benefits of the rocking chair is that they are great as rocking chairs for nursery. Many babies are supremely comforted by the gentle rocking motions, and it's a lot easier to hold a baby in a rocker than it is to do so standing up for long periods of time. A nursery rocking chair is thus great for babies, but also great for parents.
