Effective Ways to Get More Out of Power Steering Seals

Few features have benefited cars and drivers as much as power steering. An innovation that once featured only in high-end vehicles is now a standard on almost every car. Even entry-level models now have power steering installed while old cars can be retrofitted with special overhaul kits.

Power steering doesn’t just make it easier to steer a car. It improves several aspects of its handling – whether you are driving on curves, a straight road, or a narrow lane. Modern cars equipped with high-tech power steering systems are so sensitive and powerful that you can steer with just a finger.

The strength and control of a power steering system depend on the effectiveness of power steering seals. The oil seals and steering oil are responsible for maintaining the pressure generated by the hydraulic system. This is the vital component of a power steering set up.

A power steering leakage is not the only sign that indicates system malfunctioning. You may hear a whine when turning the wheel. These are small signs that indicate that the steering system is starting to malfunction. It is a signal that you should understand and furthermore, prepare yourself for a repair job. Never wait for the system to give up before you make an appointment.

As vehicle mileage increases, the O-rings of the oil seal start to deteriorate, causing oil leaks. Sometimes, as the seals wear out, small chunks get mixed with the oil and start circulating in the steering system. This causes difficulty in handling and sometimes the steering system is unable to function properly. A leak can damage the pump that is responsible for the oil’s flow. If it breaks down because of lack of proper oil supply, the system will stop working outright. Severe oil leaks may damage the power steering rack causing a system-wide breakdown.

O-rings and seal repairing are not as simple as changing a spark plug. These parts are not easily accessible, and even experts have a hard time getting at them without proper tools. Garages and auto repair and maintenance services charge heavily for repairing power steering systems.

While any mechanical system will eventually break down, you can significantly prolong the life of your power steering system by taking good care of the power steering seals. Some products are designed especially to prevent damage to them and the system. These liquids are poured into the reservoir containing the power steering oil–fluid. The circulation of the liquid repairs and restores the seals to their previous condition by blocking leak points. It also helps in maintain the oil seal’s health. These liquids can properly restore the seals after around 200 miles of driving. This is a preventive measure and cannot repair a seal when the damage is extensive.
