Why a Silver Bookmark Is a Must for Book Lovers

Even with the introduction of e-book readers, book lovers still abound because there’s nothing like the sight, smell and feel of ink on paper. But as a book lover, you must have at least one silver bookmark as a must-have accessory.

What It Is

Of course, a bookmark can be made of any material including cardboard, leather, and fabric but its main purpose is the same – to keep your place in a book and to enable you to return to the page easily instead of searching for it. You will find several types of bookmarks, too, from plain to printed, simple to elaborate, and affordable to expensive with materials like brass, silver, and even gold. You may or may not be able to clip a bookmark to a page using a page-flap.

Why Use It

You may obviously use other means aside from a bookmark to keep your place in whatever book you are currently reading. You can, for example, use the dog-earing method, which involves folding down the corner of the page so that you will have a visible marker. You have the choice of making either a large or small dog ear on your books depending on your preference.

You can even make dog ears on either the upper or bottom part of the page. You also have the choice of making just a small dog ear at the top or fold the entire page in half.

While the dog-earing method may be convenient – you don’t have to search for bookmarks, after all – you will find that it’s not a good method in book preservation. Experienced book lovers discourage it for the following reasons:

•   Dog-earing several successive pages can result in marked sections resulting in a thicker profile, a problem most common in thicker books like reference works (e.g., encyclopedias).
•   Dog-earing can result in the flap separating from the page in time since its overall integrity has been compromised. In fact, removing dog ears from yellowed pages is not recommended as it can cause the flap to separate from the rest of the page.

The bottom line: You should use durable and beautiful bookmarks as part of your efforts to preserve the overall condition of your books. You want to be able to pass on your beloved books to the next generation, especially when you have a family library, partly by using bookmarks.

To make the gifts of silver bookmarks more attractive, you may want to add personalised jewellery like a beautiful Christmas broochto the box. Your gifts will be more memorable in this manner.
