How to use a gun cleaning kit?

Many gun cleaning kits include the following:

  1. Cleaning stick. The cleaning wand moves the bore brush and cotton pads to the inside of the gun.
  2. Hole Brush. The inside of the barrel is called the bore. Use the hole brush that attaches to the cleaning rod to clean any powder, or dirt inside the barrel.
  3. Jag. Each cleaning kit comes with a serration to hold the patch in place. You can attach the saw teeth to the cleaning rod. Some serrations have sharp points, while others may include a hole for the patch to slide through.
  4. Patch. Patching involves pushing a cotton cloth into the barrel to remove dirt, residue, and excess oil.
  5. Gun oil. You'll soak the patches in gun oil before threading them through the barrel.
  6. Double-ended nylon brush. A nylon gun cleaning brush is similar to a toothbrush. They remove caked-on dirt from the outside of the gun.
  7. Clean cotton swabs. Make sure to clean those nooks, crannies, and hard-to-reach places like side panel screws or locking grooves.
  8. Shiny cloth. Want your gun to look like new? As a final step in the cleaning process, wipe the gun with a little oil and a light cloth.

How to use a gun cleaning kit

  1. First, you need to make sure your room is empty.
  2. Place the gun on a stable surface. Using a stand or vice can give you more leverage.
  3. Take apart the gun. You will need to open the action or remove the bolt to clean the inside of the barrel. You may want to purchase a bore guide to protect the initial portion of the barrel while cleaning.
  4. Saturate a patch with oil. Attach the saw teeth to the cleaning rod. Then, apply the patch to the serrations. Insert the rod into the barrel and push until the rod comes out of the barrel tip.
  5. Remove the patch from the teeth and gently pull the cleaning rod out of the bucket.

Next, replace the serrations with a hole brush. Push the brush through the bucket to remove debris.

  1. Continue pushing the patch into the bucket until the patch is clean.
  2. Use a nylon brush, cloth, and gun oil to clean the outside of the gun. Never apply oil directly to the gun; always use a cloth. Be sure to remove excess oil from the gun immediately.
  3. Finally assemble your firearm.
