A step-by-step guide has to be followed to avoid silly mistakes and lower your chances of receiving an invitation to apply from the Australian government.

In this article, understand the visa categories through which you can apply for an Australian PR visa from India and a stepwise guide for a smooth process.

Types of Australia PR visas for Indians

Now, before we go any further into this article, let’s first know the Australian PR visa categories. Learning about them can help you figure out which aligns with your circumstances more and provide a clear picture.

1. Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)

Do you possess skills that Australia needs? Then, a Skilled Independent Visa is the way to go. You don't need to get any sponsorship from a family member living in Australia or an employer. The government selects candidates for this visa type using a point-based system. The scores of your education, work experience, age, and English proficiency are calculated.

2. Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190)

If you are an Indian professional with work experience in a skilled occupation, avail of a nomination from the state or territory government in Australia. Note that it is not easy and you have to meet certain requirements set by the state of the territory you are applying for to get a nomination.

3. Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491)

Are you willing to work in Australia’s regional area? Then, apply for a Skilled Work Regional Visa (subclass 491). To qualify for this visa type, you must get a nomination from a regional state or territory government. Otherwise, get an eligible family member in Australia’s regional area to sponsor you.

Steps to apply for an Australia PR Visa from India

Once you figure out which visa type aligns with your goals, follow this stepwise guide to applying for an Australia permanent residence visa from India:

STEP 1: Check eligibility for PR

Check your eligibility using an Australia PR points calculator as per the visa category you are applying for. Each one has a unique requirement along with some common ones.

First, check if your occupation is listed in the Skilled Occupation list - no matter the visa type.

Second, your age must be under 45 to apply.

Third, score at least 65 points in the points assessment (calculated on your age, work experience, education, and English proficiency).

STEP 2: Give the language test

The Australian government prefers candidates who have fluency in the English language. Why? To adjust to the society and workforce better. So, it is a mandatory requirement. To prove that, you must take the English proficiency test, IELTS/TOEFL/PTE.

Here are the proficiency test and their respective scores:

  • IELTS: 75 or above

  • TOEFL: 25 or above

  • PTE: 65 or above

STEP 3: Get your skill assessment report

Indian candidates for Australia PR with foreign educational and professional credentials must get the evaluation done as a part of the process. To do that, SkillSelect is available. It is an online system by the government of Australia for skilled workers who wish to express their interest in applying for a visa.

When you send your transcripts to SkillSelect, it determines if your credentials are equivalent to Australian standards. The final report of your assessment must be attached to your Express of Interest (EOI).

STEP 4: Register your EOI

Next, register an Expression of interest in the SkillSelect portal. It’s informing the Australian authorities that you wish to apply for an Australian visa. If you qualify, you will receive an Invitation to Apply for an Australian PR Visa from India.

STEP 5: Submit a complete application

Once you have an ITA, go ahead and submit your application. You’ll only get 60 days of time to do that. Submit the supporting documents along with your PR application like educational credential assessment, proof of nomination (if applicable), 2 passport-size photographs, language test results, character certificate, and more.

STEP 6: Visa stamp

Submit your police clearance certificate and passport to get your visa stamped to enter Australia and start your new journey.

The complete application process takes 9-18 months.
