The current state of stem cell therapies ? Working with the future

Posted by Elite Internet Technologies on October 14th, 2016

Stem cells were a stunning discovery. It’s fair to say that they were one of the most unexpected, unprecedented discoveries in the history of medicine and biology. The main problem, in fact, was the sheer amount of uninformed hype which came with the discovery.

To put it mildly, it is unreasonable to expect a new discovery to suddenly turn into a full-blown cure for everything. Expectations were extremely high, and a large number of spectacularly, inexcusably unqualified people exploited the hope that the discovery of stem cells created.

Let’s just say that the real science is still around, doing its job, and the nutcases who exploited the discovery are largely irrelevant to any form of real science. The actual research and development of stem cell therapies, in fact, has been a long, laborious work in progress for some time.

Finally, some actual results are now emerging. The real problem with stem cell therapies wasn’t the theory; it was the practice. It’s one thing to know how something works, it’s another thing entirely to make it work the way it’s supposed to work, where you want it to work.

The actual biological dynamics of stem cell functions and applications in therapeutic situations was another hurdle. One of the reasons for the excessive hype was that people who really should have known better made extrapolation is based on theory, rather than practice. The biological dynamics are now much better understood, and working therapies are now in the early stages of application.

The use of the expression “early stages” is if anything an understatement. This type of therapy, in future, could deliver benefits which aren’t even under consideration now. Stem cells could be everything they have ever been hoped to be. It’s going to be real science that does the work, however, and that science is going to take time.

At the current stage, stem cell therapies are offering treatment for lupus, treatment for Parkinson’s, and even spinal cord therapies. These are highly demanding medical conditions which have been in the Too Hard Basket for generations.
