Electricity, the single most remarkable of all inventions that humans have done. If inventions could get coronation, electricity would be the king of the world. But, fortunately it is generated and thus owned by us humans and we have had a smooth ride ever since its invention.

Nothing ever has been so good and easy as it may sound. Same is the case with electricity and as the time progressed and it became commonplace, its dark side came forth too.

The safety issues
The biggest concern regarding electricity that one could have is about its safe generation and handling. It is a known fact that when one comes into contact with current, one could die and that is why it is of paramount importance to ensure its safe distribution to homes and all the other places.

Waterproof junction box is an example of how the electricity is kept in control to ensure public safety. Junction is a common nodal point from where the electricity is distributed in different directions and segments. In the past, these junction boxes were nothing but simple metal boxes with a door to close it. But whenever it rained, the junction boxes became vulnerable as the droplets seeped into the junction because water is a good conductor of current. Due to increasing number of incidents, electrical junction box cover needed better replacements for the safety of the people.

Plastic - bad conductor that is good for us
Plastic, unlike metals, is a bad conductor of electricity which means the current don’t pass through it and thus is a safer choice to be used to make an electrical junction box cover.

Different kinds of plastics
The most commonly available forms of plastic to manufacture different items are PC (Polycarbonate) plastic and ABS (Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) plastic. Both have there own benefits and drawbacks when put into use.

Polycarbonate plastic
PC plastic has a very high impact resistance and has easy machining with normal tools. The biggest benefit of it is the wide operating temperature range. It lasts longer even in adverse weather conditions. Its low weight and excellent insulating properties make it the first choice of all manufacturers.

Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene plastic
ABS plastic, on the other hand, is a good option too, but it has lower temperature operating range and it is more vulnerable to adverse weather conditions and UV radiations. The only benefit of ABS over PC is its low cost.
Depending upon the specific needs and budget, one can choose between the two to deal with the issues at hands.
