Vehicle Replacements You Should Know About

Posted by Sophia Addison on January 25th, 2017

Do you drive your vehicle every day? Perhaps more than once a day? Even if you use it less frequently, your vehicle is still undergoing a considerable amount of use and abuse each time that you drive it around. This means that one or more parts are on and in your vehicle are going to need to be replaced.

Some components may only need to be changed once in a blue moon while others will need to be tended to quite often. In certain instances, you may have to take your vehicle in to be serviced. On numerous occasions, however, you can simply buy new car parts and then make the switch yourself, as long as you know what you are doing. Here is a list of all the mechanisms that you will have to swap out every so often. Remember, doing so will keep your vehicle running well for a longer time.

The Air Filter

In order for your engine to run smoothly, it needs clean air to mix with the gas. Impurities will only cause damage to your engine. This is why the air filter is so important – it ensures that the air is as pure as it can possibly be. As you can imagine, the air outside the vehicle is polluted with dirt, dust, and many other particles. Over the course of your driving, all of these pollutants begin to accumulate on the filter. This can cause a decrease in fuel efficiency, increased emissions, and can reduce engine life if not tended to. With most vehicles, you will need to swap out the filter every 20,000 to 50,000 kilometres. Of course, this does depend on where you live. If you live in a particularly dusty place, you are going to need to do this much sooner.

Oil Filters

Unless you have the space and the tools for it, changing the oil filter is best left to the professionals. Of course, if you do have the experience, you may have some luck handling it by yourself. Now, there is a lot of debate about just how often you need to get your oil filter changed. You will probably get a variation of answers every time you ask the question. As a rule of thumb, most experts say that you should switch it out every other oil change. This could increase or decrease, depending on the type of driving that you do. For instance, if you encounter halting traffic every day, it is quite likely that you will be having to swap out the filter earlier than most other people.

Brake Pads

Now these are a feature that you really cannot afford to ignore. Therefore, it is imperative that you pay close attention to when you need to replace them. On average, mechanics may say that you need to replace the brake pads every three to five years. This could also be translated to every forty thousand to hundred thousand kilometres. This does largely depend on the type of vehicle you are driving. For example, if you drive a bigger car, the brake pads may wear out more easily. Furthermore, you will also need to take your driving style into consideration.

It is vital that you stay on top of all of the replacements that you need to make. This will help prevent more expensive issues from cropping up.
