Canada?s Mental Health Resources

OCD (Obsessive-compulsive disorder) is a mental disorder, which causes obsessions and/or compulsions.  With #BellLetsTalk day (January 25) behind us, it’s important to continue the conversation about mental health disorders to increase awareness and empathy.

A person  with OCD may suffer internally in an indiscernible way. For example, some people may count things in their mind or repeat something over and over until they feel satisfied by the action. It’s important to understand that compulsions are a way for someone with OCD to cope with obsessions. Researchers don’t know what causes it and this disorder can affect anyone.

Mental Health Disorders like OCD are often overlooked by insurance companies, because they are misunderstood and difficult to diagnose. If you have OCD and are on medication, document the success of your treatment plan with your doctor or therapist, this is key for your disability insurance claim.

One good way to help continue the conversation about mental health and disorders in the community is to share the articles you read with your network. Whether these articles come from the Share Lawyers blog, from the #BellLetsTalk campaign, or from hospitals like CAMH (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health), showing your support for the people who suffer can be done by sharing the stories of people who have spoken out about their situation, and by supporting research about new treatments.
