Scoliosis is among the diseases that most likely occur during the early years. It is a three-dimensional deformity of spine which makes it rotated and bent on sideways. The curve formed due to scoliosis is generally of the shape of C or S. The nature of the disease is variable in different patients. Sometimes, the spinal curve becomes stable and in other cases the size keeps changing over the time. Although the reason is not clearly known, scoliosis generally occurs due to genetic and habitual factors. Other common conditions that might be responsible for scoliosis are muscle spasms, cerebral palsy, Marfan syndrome and tumors. Scoliosis is found among 3% of the people and commonly occurs between the age of 10 and 20.
There are normally three types of scoliosis diseases:
● Infantile idiopathic scoliosis: can occur from birth up to 3 years
● Juvenile idiopathic scoliosis: can occur between the ages of 4 to 9 years
● Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: can occur between ages of 10 to 18 years
Early signs of scoliosis:
● Uneven musculature of spine
● Deformity in hips, arms and legs
● Ousted rib blade due to rotation of rib cage
Common symptoms:
● Pain in back, shoulders, neck and buttock
● Problem in breathing and coughing
● Limited functionality of spine
● Limited mobility of body
● Painful menstruation
● Tightening in stomach
Treatment methods of scoliosis:
The treatment methods typically depend on the severity of the disease. The conventional treatment types are observation, non-surgical scoliosis correction and surgery
Surgical Vs non-surgical scoliosis treatment
Surgical methods are adopted by doctors in case of severe pain and lack of functions. However, surgical process can result in harmful side effects. So, the surgical method should be avoided at all costs. Doctors suggest surgery commonly when scoliosis reaches a final stage and cannot be controlled. Still this is a wrong approach and make the condition worse after surgery. Some patients have also complained of shoulder pain after scoliosis surgery.
On the other hand, non-surgical scoliosis correction is used to hold the curve and prevent it from progressing. If the right non-surgical treatments are implemented from an early age, the patient can see a lot of improvement.
Thus, in case of any deformity in gait or posture, one must consult a doctor and if scoliosis is diagnosed, then an experienced chiropractor must be consulted.
