Backups for Your IT Infrastructure

Your organization accumulates a lot of data on a daily basis—and most of it will be useful more than once. Hence, it makes sense to keep every file properly organized and easily accessible. More importantly, data must be secure at all times because the reputation and safety of your organization, staff, and customers or clients depend greatly on it. These are just some of the important reasons why you need a reliable and secure backup system.

There are different types of backups for your IT infrastructure, and knowing how they are different from each other will help you make an informed decision when choosing the best system for your organization. Most file backup software will provide at least one way to save data and fully backup your system, but there are others that will help you save time while ensuring ample amount of storage space for regular backups.

Full data backup – This completely copies of all your data to your desired storage destination. It is the basis for all incremental, mixed, and differential backups.

Partial backup – This type copies only the data that changed after the last time you backed up your files. It can either be conducted on an incremental or differential basis. The former involves copying only the data that changed after your last incremental backup, and the latter copies only the data that changed after your last full backup.

Mixed backup – This is a sequence of differential backups and full backups conducted alternately or repeatedly rotating.

Once you have the right system for backing up your IT infrastructure, you need to have a set of policies for it. Without a backup policy, your organization could be risking irreversible data loss. While software can retrieve data from a recently wiped out or reformatted hard drive, there is no guarantee that all files can be retrieved—and those that are retrieved are typically disorganized, so you would have to manually search, rename, and reorganize everything. Without a backup policy, your data can also be stolen or used inappropriately by employees.

Backups are crucial for your IT infrastructure, as you never can tell when your computer or hard drive might crash. External storage devices could fail or become corrupted, too, causing you to lose all your important data when you least expect it.

Investing in high-quality local and cloud based backups is a good start. Local storage systems include hard disk drives and external hard disk drives. Cloud storage is cost-effective and secure, and it lets you access your data from anywhere. Some organizations invest in both backup solutions for their IT infrastructure for maximum reliability.
