Some Important Facts about Potassium Acetate

When potassium hydroxide is treated with acetic acid, potassium acetate forms as the two chemicals are neutralized together. Potassium actetate is usually found in either a solid crystalline state or is dissolved in water to form a heavy brine. The most common application for potassium acetate is as an alternative deicer to chloride salts such as calcium or magnesium chloride.

Potassium Acetate is gaining popularity as a deicer because of its environmental advantages. It is a non-persistent and biodegradable salt with low BOD, and does not contain urea. It is less aggressive on the soil and much less corrosive on vegetation than chloride containing alternatives. Its effect on human health is also minimal, and it is because of these benefits that potassium acetate deicers are widely used in places like airports and city roads and areas of environmental sensitivity.

The many applications of potassium acetate deicer include deicing, hydro testing, well kill fluids and well test work-over. It works quickly, requires fewer applications than some alternatives and is easy to apply with existing equipment.

One of the main advantages of potassium acetate deicer is that it remains active even at temperatures as low as -60°C. It is less slippery than glycol based products, making it safer to use on roads and runways. Potassium acetate as a solid can be easily blended with deionized water to a variety of concentrations and thus can be purchased in bulk, or in packaged mediums such as drums or totes. Purchasing in bulk makes it a cost-effective solution to the problem of removing ice.
