Bathroom Vanities: The Focal Point

Posted by Nick Niesen on November 1st, 2010

When it comes to décor in the bathroom, there are only so many things one can do with most elements of the bathroom. There are only so many colors a person can paint their walls or have their tiles. One element of a bathroom stands out above most others, though, in its ability to completely change the look of a room. What feature has such remarkable power over décor? The answer is bathroom vanities, of course. Bathroom vanities are able to set the mood for the whole room from their style, and are inevitably the focal point of a bathroom's décor.

With bathroom vanities playing such a vital part of the décor in your bathroom, the different styles of vanities available obviously merit some consideration. Finding the right vanity can be a bit tricky, but it is well worth the effort. A vanity can, after all, do a number of things for your décor. Firstly, the right vanity can fit perfectly into your décor and become the central point that brings your whole room together. On the other hand, finding a vanity that catches your eye can just as easily be the thing which inspires your décor. In this case, rather than being the thing that brings your room together, it is the starting point on top of which you build your room.

Whether it is the focal point or the cornerstone, though, there are nearly endless different bathroom vanities available. Each one will have a different effect on the room. But with so many possibilities, it is easy to get caught up in the impact that the flashy and dramatic styles have. It is, however, important to remember that in many cases simplicity is the best way to go. Your basic vanity usually consists of a countertop with an inlaid sink, as well as a mirror, and often some form of cabinet underneath. This design is quite adequate to fit into most decors. The vanity itself can be stained wood, or painted, whichever works best, and the countertop can be any number of surfaces. The greatest advantage of going with a more basic model is that it will give your room a kind of simple elegance that models that are more glamorous may lack.

If you do wish to go with a somewhat more unique model, though, you have a number of choices. If your décor demands bathroom vanities that are more ornate, you may want to look into a model with a hard wood countertop, and perhaps a more out of the ordinary sink, to give your bathroom a very up scale feel. If bathroom vanities of a more wild nature strike your fancy, you can even find a few models that may turn a few heads for an entirely different reason. For instance, a plastic counter top and sink complete with shining chrome exposed piping will lend your bathroom a futuristic flare. Dull metal counter tops and blockier construction can be used instead, if you want to go for an industrial look.
