CCTV Camera Installation Guide

Posted by 2MCCTV on July 18th, 2017

The prospect of having to drill holes through your walls to accommodate all the power cables and video connections that your surveillance system needs can be intimidating. Fortunately, many home security systems offered by home automation and security providers come in all-inclusive packages that make installation a breeze. Here is a step by step on how to prepare your home, buy the right surveillance package, and install your security camera system

1 - Preparing your home

When setting up a surveillance system, you want to make sure that you can get every possible and essential area within view. Be smart about your planning and prioritize areas that you think you need to watch the most. It will be both impractical and expensive to keep an eye on every square inch of your home, so take time to study your needs. Draw up a diagram of the entire house or get your hands on its blue prints so you can have a good view of where you need to place cameras the most. Mark them and make sure that your chosen spots are not blocked by anything so you can maximize camera view. As a rule of thumb, you should reserve cameras for your front and back doors, large common spaces, off-street windows, porch, driveway, and stairways.

2 - Buying the right package

While you can always opt to buy cameras piece by piece, it is easier and cheaper to buy packaged or bundled security systems. The most basic systems usually come with 1 to 3 cameras, a digital video recorder, some power cords, and wiring cables. Other systems also provide the option of a wireless setup, so there is no need for complex wiring installations. Surveillance cameras are designed for easy mounting on walls and nooks.

If you want basic home security, consider getting a package that includes at least 2 to 3 outdoor cameras and a DVR with a good recording capacity. If you have young children and really expensive valuables, add at least 3 wireless cameras to cover rooms and common areas and consider streaming options right on your computer or your mobile devices.

3 - Setting up the monitor and recording devices

To view and store your footage, you will need a good NVR or DVR. These devices receive all the video feeds your camera system captures and broadcast them on a monitor, which can either be a small TV or a computer screen. DVRs offer a wide range of memory capacities that allow storage of certain amounts of footage. NVRs or network video recorders usually have greater capacities and enable storage of higher definition footage.
