Eddy Current Testing to Detect Discontinuities and Cracks in Various Industries

Posted by NDT Consultancy Services Inc on July 26th, 2017

In different kinds of engineering processes, NDT or Non Destructive Testing is referred to the process of determining the integrity of various equipment used in them. Not only the equipment, NDT can also determine the feasibility of a complete engineering process especially, in the manufacturing industry. This helps in producing optimum and defect-free products within safe working conditions and without causing any unexpected downtime. NDT is performed in such a manner that the equipment or process under testing is not damaged in any way. In addition to the manufacturing industry, NDT is also useful in the mechanical, electrical, civil, aeronautical, nuclear and medical engineering processes. Some of the typical NDT testing techniques used are ultrasonic testing, magnetic-particle testing, magnetic flux leakage testing, leak testing, visual and optical inspection, eddy current testing and others.

Since electric current is one of the most important component in different industrial processes, eddy current testing (ECT) is used to measure the conductivity, to detect the discontinuities and thickness of coating and plating on articles in various industries like nuclear, petrochemical, steel and aerospace. It is based on the principles of electromagnetic induction, which states that flow of electricity, under certain circumstances, can cause magnetic effects while magnetism, under certain circumstances, produces electric current. It can be observed in a way that when an alternating current (AC) is passed through a coil, a changing magnetic field is generated. Eddy current testing method is applied to tubing, sheets, cylinders and coatings used in the industries mentioned above. Also, some of the specialized equipment and processes tested with ECT are off-shore platforms, construction and maintenance of pipelines, pressure vessels, above storage tanks, aerospace vehicles, power generation equipment and other research facilities.

In order to perform NDT, proper training is required for the professionals otherwise, it would not yield the expected results. This training is provided by many centers in both high-tech classrooms as well as through online methods. All the necessary information, support and other related requirements are provided with highly trained and qualified staff in these centers. Engineers interested in making a career in NDT can enroll for different courses in these centers and earn a recognized certification that will help in them getting various jobs in this domain.

If you are interested in learning NDT techniques, you can enroll in any of these schools. Upon exploring the internet, you will come across many such consultancies providing training and support in NDT, are contactable through their websites.
