How to Maintain Home Gym Equipment

Posted by Roland Steyn on August 18th, 2017

Apart from giving you the ability to work out whenever it’s convenient, one of the benefits of having a home gym is hygiene. You can clean your own equipment and personally maintain them, so there is no need to worry about germs from other people. These gym machines may be made of stainless steel and heavy materials, but they are just as prone to damage as anything else—which is why they need regular tune-up and cleaning. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when maintaining your gym equipment at home:

• Regularly wipe down upholstery after use because the perspiration and other liquids will destroy the upholstery and cause germ build up. Don’t forget to wipe the frames to keep it from rusting and deterioration.

• Use a mild solution to clean your upholstery. The solution should be a mix of ten percent home liquid dish soap and ninety percent warm water. To wipe the frames, use the same solution but replace the dish soap with car wash soap. Do not use harsh cleaning solutions or solvents to clean plastic materials because they may cause damage and discoloration.

• Regularly inspect the belt, bolts, cables, grip, weight stacks, springs, deck, electrical wires, handles, etc. If there is excessive damage or years of wear and tear, then replace them and consult with an expert. If the unit is still within warranty, check if you can request replacement parts.

• Before using, inspect the machine if there is any missing part. Do a test run before exercising.

• For chrome tubes or parts that are heavily used, apply a layer of car wax to prevent corrosion from perspiration and other liquids.

• Maintain a temperature of around 68 to 74 degrees Fahrenheit and a humidity of 20-60 percent in your home gym. If you do aerobics, Pilates, cardio and weight training, then keep the room temperature to 65 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit with a humidity of 40 to 60 percent.

Follow these simple tips to keep your machines and gym equipment in tip-top shape so that you can use them for years. Ask your shop and experts if they recommend certain cleaning materials of specific maintenance guidelines. Most importantly, if you plan on purchasing branded machines such as the Assault Air Bike, make sure that you are buying from an authorized dealer that sells the original products.
