How to Minimise the Appearance of a Double Chin

Posted by Sophia Addison on September 28th, 2017

A double chin is a relatively common condition that occurs due to a layer of fat forming below an individual’s chin. Also known as submental fat, double chin fat is often the result of weight gain. However, this isn’t always the case, and an individual does not necessarily have to be overweight to have a double chin. They can also occur as a result of genetics, and in some cases they can be brought on due to the looser skin that’s associated with aging. For many, a double chin is not especially aesthetically pleasing and they wish to be rid of it. Fortunately, there are several things that one can do in order to get rid of submental fat, ranging from diet and exercise through to Kybella treatments and neck lifts.

Diet and Exercise

Quite often, a double chin is the result of weight gain. If this is the case, before rushing out for a Kybella treatment or a neck lift, the best course is to make changes to your diet and also take steps to exercise more often. Diet is probably the most important factor of these two, but it’s also important to exercise as well, as this will help you to achieve the results you’re after.

Some good healthy eating guidelines are as follows:

  • Eat at least three servings of fruits daily
  • Eat at four servings of vegetables daily
  • Replace refined grains with whole grains
  • Eliminate processed foods from your diet
  • Eat lean protein, such as fish and poultry
  • Eat avocados, nuts and other foods that contain healthy fats
  • Replace dairy products with low-fat dairy products
  • Try to avoid sugar as much as possible
  • Eliminate soft drinks completely
  • Eat appropriately sized portions

When it comes to exercise, it’s a good idea to do at least 45 minutes a day. Joining a gym is a great way to stay motivated, while having a personal trainer can also put you on the right track towards losing your double chin. In addition to regular physical activity, there are a number of specific exercises that are aimed at reducing submental fat, so doing a search online for some of these or consulting with your local fitness centre professional is recommended.

Neck Lifts and Kybella Treatments

If you decide on a having a cosmetic procedure performed to get rid of your double chin, the main choices are a neck lift or a Kybella treatment. Neck lifts are quite invasive and expensive, but they do provide great results. The main downside to having a neck lift procedure performed is that it requires you to be fully anesthetised and the recovery period is quite long. Kybellatreatments, on the other hand, are specifically designed to treat double chins, are much less expensive, and do not require any surgery. In addition to this, Kybella treatments can be done in a short amount of time and the recovery time after the procedure is relatively short.
