Top Things to do in Namur, Wallonia

Namur- the capital of Province of Namur and Wallonia is situated at the conflux of Sambre and Meuse Rivers. The location at the confluence of these two rivers makes it pleasant to visit the city of Namur by water. Namur has an interesting history associated with it and the architecture of Namur is worth exploring.

The best thing or the highlight of Namur is undoubtedly the Citadel of Namur. This magnificent and imposing fortress was originally built in the Roman era and since then had been rebuilt multiple times. The citadel is very well preserved and reveals the historic period associated with it. Located on a hill, this Citadel gives the beautiful and incredible panoramic view of the city of Namur.  Apart from the Citadel, there are some great museums like Felicien Rops Museum (featuring the artworks of Belgian Artist who specialised in the artwork based on erotic theme), Museum of Ancient Art and Namur’s Archaeological Museum etc.  Yet another “must visit” place is Place d’Armes, which is often the busiest square of the city of Namur. The famous bronze sculpture of the snail is located here and unofficially considered the symbol of this city. Yet another attraction at the square is the Belfry, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is quite popular just like the other Belfries across Belgium. You can also pay a quick visit to the Cathedral of Saint Aubain, which is a classical old building in Namur. The impressive interior and dark stone frontage makes it worth a visit and undoubtedly, a visit to Namur would be incomplete without a trip to this Cathedral. Last but not the least, the exemplar of typical Belgian architecture is Palais des Congrès that is a stone and brick building and was once the stock exchange of Namur. If you are a photographer or love photography, then this building is worth clicking, for it is amazing and its architectural beauty is bound to impress you.

After exploring the architecture, explore the waterfront by enjoying a walk on Meuse River’s Bank. The picturesque vista around the riverbank on board a cruise is one of the most awe-inspiring experiences you can have in Belgium while on a trip to Namur. You can even rent a boat (License-free) or take up stand up paddling etc. while taking a stroll along the riverbank. Apart from this, you can have some local dishes in Namur along with a bottle of traditional beer from the region. If you are in Belgium around the Christmas time or during any festival in Namur, you can visit the markets to get some specialities as souvenirs for your friends and family sold during the festivities.  The experience at the Belgian Christmas Market will be indeed amazing and you can have a great time shopping there.

A visit to Namur would be indeed relaxing as the city is small and you can explore it by taking a walking tour. If you are planning a holiday to Belgium, then Namur should definitely make it to your travel itinerary.
