Film Making in the Digital Age

The art of filmmaking and video production in recent times has undergone a dramatic change. Today, our everyday gadgets sport an array of multimedia features that could only be thought of as magical, around three decades ago. We are living in a world where entire films have been shot on cell phones; and an odd few have even qualified for the Oscars. This technique of filmmaking and formal training is provided by various established top film making schools in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai and in other vibrant locations

In earlier days of video production and filmmaking, everything was analogue. Just walk down memory lane to the analogue era of VHS and Beta Cam, or the humble audio cassette as an example. Technicians back then had to make a mix tape on cassette using nothing but albums that were also on cassette tapes. Undoubtedly, it was a highly tedious task.

Now, in the digital era, video editing is done entirely on computers, of course with more processing power and specialized software. Digital implies that every picture is coded into a series of numbers and this number sequence remains the same. As a result, there is no quality loss when copied repeatedly. This is the very reason why movies and audio remain crisp and pristine in the digital domain.

Another remarkable ability of digital media is random access, which means that you can skip to a precise location of a movie or song without having to scrub through any length of tape: no fast forwarding or rewinding necessary. That alone has changed the face of video production like never before.

Gone are the days of heavy, cumbersome industrial-sized equipment and long, tedious processes that were not just time consuming but also heavy on the pocket. This equipment have been replaced by pocket-sized smart phones that probably have more video recording capability and functionality than the most advanced digital video camcorders flooding the markets just ten years ago.

To excel in digital filmmaking career, there are various film institutes across India that offer degree filmmaking and film making courses. AAFT School of Cinema is one of the top film schools that provide holistic education and training in film studies.
