R.E.M. and Paul Smith Just Created a Collection That's the Best Kind of '90s Nostalgia

he '90s were primetime for pop culture—especially if you're into alternative music. And R.E.M.—the guys behind hits like "Losing my Religion" and "It's the End of the World as We Know It"—had one of the most influential perspectives of the era. Now, 25 years after the album Automatic for the Peopledropped, the band is still celebrating. R.E.M. just partnered with British fashion designer Paul Smith on a collaboration to mark the anniversary.

Doing collaborations is nice because they’re very challenging; they’re not your normal thing to do," says Smith. "And certain albums just mean so much to people, from school or university or family. There’s a strong power. Is it linked to something sad, something beautiful. You forget how much music really means."

And Smith kept the designs close to the core of R.E.M., using key products to display the band's lasting sentiments—album artwork, song lyrics, and promotional photos, for example. The collection consists of graphic T-shirts, woven scarves, and silk pocket squares.
