Reports of armed robberies that were planned through Pokemon Mega

You make them fight. Early on in the mega pokemon game, you pick a team – red (Team Valor), blue (Team Mystic) or yellow (Team Instinct) – and your team will dictate which gyms are friendly and which are combative. Once you hit level five, you can take your Pokemon to battle at gyms, either friendly ones that are held by your team (think of this as exercise) or enemy ones where you can battle with local champs (think of this as a prize-fight).

As I wandered around Connaught Place, I was disappointed by the number of Ratatas, Pidgeys and other low level Pokemon I stumbled upon, but was equally impressed by the number of PokeGyms that had already been claimed by trainers around me. Places at the heart of South Delhi, such as Green Park and Hauz Khas, are also filled with Pokemon, PokeStops and a few gyms, but locations get a little sparse nearer to Gurgaon. The world, and to a lesser degree India, has caught Pokemon Mega fever, and the game’s unique real-world touch has put Pokemon Mega on the headlines for a myriad different reasons, some hilarious and others terrifying.

A person waltzing into a hospital room or occupied bathroom in search for Pokemon isn’t as newsworthy as when there was a stampede in New York’s Central Park after a rare new Pokemon (Vaporeon) emerged (read here ). Thankfully, no one was injured. There have even been reports of armed robberies that were planned through Pokemon Mega, with robbers planting beacons near Pokestops to lure people into secluded areas. On a positive note, the game is hoping to become the exercise app that works (walking is central to progressing in the game, and you can also find Pokemon Eggs, which only hatch after you’ve walked 2, 5 or 10 kilometers, depending on the egg), and there are even reports of people overcoming social anxiety and stepping out of their homes to play Pokemon Mega. Heck, Pokemon Mega is just a fortnight old and Hillary Clinton has already begun using it to register new voters, with her Ohio staff setting up shop at various Pokestops in hopes of attracting young people to register.

Pokemon owes much of its its conception to creator Satoshi Tajiri’s childhood love of bug collecting, but the mythology and animist religious history of Japan also provided rich inspiration.
