Ropar, now known as Rupnagar, is a place that holds a rare combination of ancient, medieval and modern histories. Located on the bank of River Satluj, this is where excavations and explorations were conducted recently and the findings indicated that the first civilized folk to settle here were the Harappans, who apparently reached the upper Satluj towards the close of third millennium B.C. This city also has the place where Maharaja Ranjit Singh and Lord William Bentick had a historic meeting to implement a treaty involving boundary issues, marking an important spot to visit for tourists.

One of the five sacred "Takhats" or seats of Sikh religion is the Takhat Shri Kesgarh Sahib. It is placed at the Gurudwara Keshgarh Sahib, which is the most important of the shrines at Anandpur Sahib. This Gurudwara is where the Khalsa was born. Gurudwara called Parivar Vichhora Sahib marks the site where the family of the Guru was separated after being attacked by the Mughals. Every year in the month of December, a large fair is held here which lasts three days. Gurudwara Sadabarat on Nangal road has hosted and served Langar day and night to generations of travelers.

At Gurudwara Patalpuri Sahib, Sikhs from all over the world immerse the ashes after death. Even the Babhuti of Shri Hari Krishan Ji was brought from Delhi and established at this place. Gurudwara Bhatta Sahib is located on the periphery of Rupnagar town and was built in memory of Guru Gobind Singh who had stopped there on his way to Chamkaur Sahib. His gifts to the Pathans, his weapons, are placed in the shrine.

At the village of Jatwahar lies the ancient Jateshwar Mahadev Temple. It is visited by pilgrims from the neighboring states of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, besides Punjab. The Bhakhra-Nangal Dam, the largest Dam in India and second largest in Asia, is built on river Satluj and creates the Ropar wetlands, also called the Ropar Lake. The lake is home to a big number of animals, birds, and fishes. These places mark some popular tourist attractions.
