10. Vinicunca, Cusco Region, Peru

Famous as the Rainbow Mountain, the word “Vinicunca” literally translates to “seven-colored mountain” in the local language of Cusco region in Peru. This breathtaking mountain finds itself on the wanderlust list of many travel enthusiasts.

Although the Vinicunca rainbow mountain was previously hidden under a thick layer of ice for years, the mountain’s colors that are formed by the mineral deposits are now beautifully visible, and are a treat to watch. You can go there with Ayni Peru Expedition.

9. Mu Cang Chai, Vietnam

Located in the rural province of Northern Vietnam, Mu Cang Chai is a hidden gem in a tiny and rural habitat. Home to deep green terraced rice fields, it feels absolutely so surreal you’d think you’ve landed into a painting. The fields’ colors vary, depending upon your month of visit, from emerald green to light brown.

8. Kirkjufell, Grundarfjörður, Iceland

Considered to be the most photographed mountain in the country of Iceland, Kirkjufell can be found at unique location on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. It gives a view as if the peak is rising out of the ocean, and the waterfalls in front of the mountain only enhance the majestic look of this utopian landscape.

7. Three Sisters, Blue Mountains, New South Wales, Australia

A number of visitors flock and rush to Echo Point every year to catch a glimpse of the Three Sisters. It’s an astounding rock formation in the Blue Mountains, a region that has eucalyptus forests, waterfalls and steep cliffs.

6. Mount Rainier, Washington

Apart from being an active volcano, Mount Rainier is also home to six rivers. This mountain is the most frozen peak in the country, and hence hikers and mountain climbers must be prepared for any type of weather when they visit this mountain. It is a common sight to find snow in July at a height of just 5000 - 8000 feet.

5. Mount Fitz Roy, Patagonia

Although this cloud-covered mountain is popular as Fitz Roy, it was previously christened Chaltén, which translates to “smoking mountain” in the Tehuelche Tribe dialect.  The name Fitz Roy is dedicated to Sir Robert FitzRoy, who guided Sir Charles Darwin into South America. This picturesque mountain is situated on the borderline of Argentina and Chile in the southern Patagonian Ice Field.

4. The Matterhorn, Zermatt, Switzerland

The Matterhorn peak, standing tall at 15,000 feet on the border of Italy and Switzerland, is by far the most recognised peak in the Alps. The Matterhorn is also home to the world’s first open-air cog railway, the Gornergrat Bahn. This train runs between the mountain and the town of Zermat, which is located at the base of the mountain. The Matterhorn may also be the most dangerous peak as more than 500 people have died trying to climb the peak. Back in 1865, when the first seven tried to scale the summit, 4 of them did not survive to reach the summit.

3. Canadian Rockies, Banff National Park, Banff, Canada

The Canadian Rockies are an absolute delight for a travel enthusiast. With about 50 peaks that are 11,000 feet high, the mountain range is filled with stunning alpine lakes, that enhance the beauty of the peaks. The Peyto Lake, among the Canadian Rockies, is so breathtaking it could easily qualify for a real life postcard. It’s eye-appealing bright turquoise color is a result of glacial rock flour, which is a product of glacial ice moving downhill and grinding gravel and rocks on the way. The dust erupting from this grinding ends up in the glacial lakes, and this absorbs light and creates the beautiful color that we see.

2. Ama Dablam, Himalayas, Nepal

Ama Dablam is situated in the lap of the Himalayas. When it comes to the Himalayas, Mt. Everest usually steals all the limelight. Although Ama Dablam isn’t so famous, it’s no less impressive. The name Ama Dablam loosely translates to “mother’s necklace” and indicates the mountain ridges that form a mother’s arm and the hanging glacier forms a necklace. Many people even claim this mountain to be the most beautiful mountain in the Himalayas.

1. Mount Fuji, Honshu Island Japan

Mount Fuji is an active volcano mountain in the Honshu Island. Mount Fuji is the epitome of Japanese culture, tradition and imagery. This active volcano mountain has found references in the holy scriptures and literature from the 8th century. The last volcanic eruption of Mount Fuji was witnessed in the early 1700s. This 12,000-foot peak is the tallest peak in the country and can be even viewed from Tokyo on a clear day. Climbing the mountain may not be as rewarding as you would imagine it to be, due to the barren landscape that leads to the top.
