Steps Required to be Taken for FSSAI Registration

Any person dealing with food items in whatsoever format is it a retailer or exporter or manufacturer or trader or wholesaler or importer of food products or supplying raw materials to the manufacturer is required to obtain the 14 digit Food license number under FSSAI. The FSSAI has its reporting to Ministry of Health and family welfare.

In order to maintain the standard of food quality Licensing is made mandatory, this is achieved through inspection by concerned food department before issuing the License. Such compliance requirement ensures that food products undergo certain quality checks, hence shall result in lesser instances of adulteration, substandard products and also improve accountability of manufacturers.

What are the types of FSSAI Registration in India?

1.   FSSAI Basic registration

For business/startups having annual turnover below Rs.12 lakhs

2.   FSSAI State license

For business /startups having an annual turnover of between Rs.12-20 Crores

3.   FSSAI Central license

For business /startups having an annual turnover above Rs.20 Crores

The FSSAI Central License is also required to be obtained in case supply is done at the government offices or import/export food products.

What is the Procedure for FSSAI Registration?

For Basic License

  1. Go to FSSAI website.
  2. Go to click on ‘Sign-up (For Self-Care Portal)
  3. Fill out the form and generate a unique user Id and password.

Note: that the user ID is valid for 30 days so make sure you apply online within 30 days or this user ID will be disabled after 30 days.

  1. Login from the User Id generated.
  2. Fill the application form and attach all required documents asked. Note signed Form B is also required to be attached
  3. Take print of filled application form and SUBMIT. Take a note of reference number to track the application in future.
  4. Send following  of application to Regional Authority/State Authority
  5. Online Application Form
  6. All supportive documents within 15 days from the date of online submission.
  7. Eligibility for Registration Certificate: Check your eligibility according to the turnover of your business in order to obtain a central license, State license or for Registration Certificate according to your turnover.
  8. Fill form appearing on screen.
  9. Now click on the check eligibility column under action column. Note  If you operate in more than one area/premise/unit and work in multiple districts or states then fill one unit and after that click on Save & Add
  10. Once you have filled up all the details for all your units separately, one by one now clicks on Proceed to Generate Summary of Eligibility Report (All premises/Unit).

For State License

In furtherance above for state license follow given below steps:

  1. Log in again and a home page will open with the heading ‘List of Application (s).
  2. State Registration: Select Apply for License/ Registration.
  3. Fill out the Application. Note that you need to have a separate license for each location.
  4. Also, the Head Office/Registered Office central License is required to be taken in case you are working in more than two States PLUS a separate license for each of your operating locations as per capacity, turnover, State /Central license rules.
  5. Click on Proceed.
  6. A new page will appear to select the license category. NOTE In case you have an office or are working for two other business in two states are involved and simultaneously applying for Head/Registered Office License then Click on Apply for a single Central License for all businesses.

For Central License

In furtherance above for Centre license follow given below steps:

  1. Based on the pre-check procedure, if you come in the category for Central License you will be directed to the Central Licensing page
  2. Fill the form appearing on the screen.
  3. Select Food Category. Note: Fill in generic names. To add every new product Click on ‘Save &Add’ under action.
  4. After filling up each form on the screen you are clicking on ‘Save & Next’
  5. Download all the forms. Fill it up and keep ready to be attached wherever required.
  6. Upload the downloads applicable.
  7. From the drop-down menu between 1 to 5 years chose for the years you want a license.
  8. You can the Preview/Edit Application before Final Submission.
  9. Make payment and take a print or note of acknowledgment receipt.
  10. In case of any modifications required to be made after final submission of the online form then it can be done by contacting the designated officer appearing on the ‘Acknowledgement Receipt.

On receipt of the application, the food licensing authority shall scrutinize the application along with the documents attached, on being satisfied it may grant the license.
