All You Need To Know About Model Aircraft

Posted by yixinmodel on July 12th, 2018

Basically, model aircraft are unmanned small size aircraft or a replica of imaginary, scale or an existing aircraft.

What Are The Various Types Of Model Aircraft?

These model aircraft are divided into two categories as follows:

  • Non-flying models also called shelf, static and display models. They are the typically mass-produced toys in plastic, white metal or injection moulded polystyrene and are highly detailed, accurate and require hours of work. They are mostly models manufactured for museum displays and are available in kit forms too.
  • Flying Models vary from toy gliders made of powdered scale models of carbon fibre, balsa wood, plastic, fibreglass, styrofoam, tissue paper, bamboo to foam polystyrene or cardstock model. Some of them are actually very large in size and are used to research various flight properties of a potential full-scale aircraft model

What are the Uses of Model Aircraft?

Aircraft researchers and manufacturers make these model aircraft for a number of purposes such as robot models can be used for development and testing a new design or a static model can be used for promotion of a commercial aircraft etc. Here are a few common uses:

  • Display

As mentioned, a static model aircraft is made up of fibreglass, metal, paper, wood and many other materials. One can find models that have been painted but require clipping, construction or painting and glueing and even painted and built models for display.

  • Aerodynamic Research

Props structure models are made for free flight testing and wind tunnel research. Especially for wind tunnel research, where the research static models are scaled to find data that can help in aiding the potential full design of the aircraft.

  • Promotional Use

Most of the famous airlines such as Polar Air Cargo, New Zealand Airlines, South African airlines, American Airlines, Lufthansa, jet airways, Singapore Airlines, Etihad Airways, Emirates, Finnair, Korean Airlines, Indigo etc allow their aircraft to be modelled into static aircraft model. Usually, the airlines order large models of the aircraft in bulk and distribute them to the airport, airline officials, government officials, travel agencies and customers as a promotional item.

  • Engineering Mock-Ups

Full-scale industrial machinery models are used for production development and are made of various different materials.

  • Aeromodelling (Flying Model for Sports)

Aeromodelling is generally a past time or sport where the flying airplanes resemble a low version of the full version of the aircraft. These flying models vary from the static models in strength and weight. They mostly look like flying dinosaurs and birds.

To add to the accessibility of this hobby or sport, model aircraft manufacturers have developed an ARF (Almost ready to Fly) scale downed model to reduce the skill and time required, for an inexperienced flyer.

What Are The Different Competitions For Aeromodelling?

There are 5 famous world competitions organized by the FAI for model aircraft. They are:

  • Free flight (F3U)
  • Team racing (F2U)
  • Pylon racing (F5D and F3D)
  • Drone racing (F3U)
  • Control Line (F2)
