GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease is a condition where the acid content inside the stomach returns back to the esophagus thus causing damage to the lining and other tissues in the food pipe. This mainly happens due to the failure of the sphincters or valves which was supposed to prevent the backflow of the acids from the stomach into the esophagus.

Cause

The origin of the GERD symptom is due to the very basic fact that the over the time, due to various factors, the sphincters or the valves gets weaken and hence, fails to close properly. This leads to a condition where the content inside the stomach could regurgitate back into the path through which it came from.

Since the esophagus isn’t accommodated to contain high acidic content that is found in the stomach, hence these acidic contents will damage the esophagus in various ways. Due to this reflux, there is also pain in the upper abdomen section which is also known as the heartburn. Following are the Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease Symptoms:

1   The first sign of GERD is having heartburn. This condition is characterized by pain in the stomach region or the upper part of the abdomen which could radiate to another place of the body. This pain is related to the timing in which food was taken.

2   The heartburn usually comes after taking a meal. But this isn’t limited to in case of only food taking also. In many cases, there are also cases in which, the heartburn or the pain in the upper abdomen section comes at night and it only gets worse and worse. In these cases, you should go to a doctor and consult him/her with what procedure should need to be taken and what medications should be given.

3   Chest pain is also a common symptom in case of GERD. This pain occurs after eating foods and hence, GERD pain is simply associated with pain coming after a few minutes of having lunch or dinner. The characteristic feature of this pain is that the intensity also grows bigger at night.

4   Nausea associated with vomiting are also the other symptoms which may occur if the person is having GERD. But since these symptoms do occur in some other diseases also, hence it is difficult to tell if the person is having GERD from this symptom alone. There needs to be done a special type of diagnosis known as a differential diagnosis which will exclude the other diseases and will keep only the cause which is valid for the current condition.

5   Difficulty in swallowing is also another symptom of this disease. While swallowing pain occurring is also not an uncommon scenario. Hence, it becomes very difficult to eat if you are suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disease.

There are various plans which could decrease the intensity of the GERD pain thus making the person a bit relieved. The GERD Diet Plan is one such approach in which a special diet plan is employed by which all these are taken under control. RefluxMD has such recipes which could help you in this.
