Baby Pillows in India- excellent support for baby?s neck

The NICHHD recommends that you avoid pillows for babies under one year of age and to never place a baby on a pillow to sleep or add pillows to the crib in order to reduce the risk of SIDS.

There is no rule about requirement of a pillow for the baby to sleep on but it is comfortable for adults to sleep on a pillow. A suitable pillow supports our neck to relax our bodies as we are bigger but a wrong choice of pillow can leave our neck cramped.

Small children must not be given wrong pillow as they can roll off if it doesn’t have side support and it can also increase the risk of SIDS. If the baby is old and moves around then large pillow would be dangerous as the pillow can move on top of the baby. Therefore it is recommended to give pillow to the baby after the age of 2 years.

When it is time to give the baby a pillow to sleep on, ensure the pillow is small and flat in order to provide excellent neck support. Various types of baby pillows in India which can be used are

  • Use the close and secure sleeper to assist younger babies lie on their back which can reduce the risk of SIDS and Head-N-Back sleep positioned can be used as an inexpensive option.
  • Toddler pillows such as Bobble Roos’ Toddler blanket pillows can also be used as these are good travel neck pillows.
  • Wedge pillows can be used for babies who need to be at an incline as these pillows keep the baby at an incline safely.

Baby cot sheets- Providing comfort with safety

There should be a fitted sheet on a firm crib mattress with no other soft objects or bedding in the crib with the baby. A few safety measures have to be considered before getting a homemade baby cot sheets in India such as

  • Warnings on the dangers of crib bedding: The American academy of pediatrics along with other child care organizations such as SIDS first candle alliance and health Canada say that crib bedding is dangerous to babies. They recommend only a suitable-sized firm mattress and a well-fitted crib sheet in the baby’s crib. The mattress should not have an indentation when the baby is lying on it. Baby comforters, blankets, stuffed animals, crib bumpers, quilts, sleep positioners etc must not be included in the baby’s crib as these can cause injury or death due to entrapment, smothering and strangulation. Use infant sleep clothing and sleeping sacks instead of blankets to keep the baby warm while sleeping. A crib designed to prevent the head entrapment must be used instead of the crib bumpers which are unsafe. Crib manufactured after the year 2011 must be used as the U.S. safety standards were updated in that year. Unsafe cribs are not allowed to be sold even at rummage sales or thrift stores.
