Unlike judo, where the players wear colored belts to display their stature in the sport, Six Sigma belt holders don’t make any such display. However, each Six Sigma professional has a belt and the color of the belt shows their placement in the Six Sigma hierarchy. It all starts with the white belt and goes up all the way to the master black belt. In between, you have the Six Sigma black belt, the Six Sigma green belt and the Six Sigma yellow belt.

A Six Sigma green belt holder is an individual who works full-time on Six Sigma projects. For the simpler projects, the green belt may be assigned a team leader role. For more complex projects, the green belt will work as a member of the team led by a black belt or a master black belt. Irrespective of the complexity of the project, a green belt always works under the guidance of a black or a master black belt. One of the big benefits of a green belt is that they get to work within their functional area. Some of the other roles that a green belt performs include

• Analyzing and solving process quality-related problems;
• Coordinating with the team for data collection and validating the quality measurement system;
• Motivating the team by displaying leadership and facilitation skills and
• Developing the project charter and designing the SIPOC (Supplier, Input, Process and Output) diagrams for their projects.

A Six Sigma black belt holder is assigned with the task of measuring, structuring and analyzing the business process problems across their organization. A black belt is more of a leadership role where they manage project teams. One of the primary roles is to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the team members and assign roles accordingly.

A black belt is trained to improve business processes using lean concepts and advanced statistical analyses. Another critical role a black belt professional plays is in the understanding of variation. It is said that variation plays a negative role in quality management and often results in emotional decision making. When variation is reduced, improvements can be initiated. A black belt, apart from reducing variance, also coaches business leaders and other personnel on reducing variation and making better business decisions.

Getting a green or a black belt is not dependent on experience alone. One can attain these belts when they go through a structured training and certification process. The nominated individuals need to learn theory and importantly, how to implement their learning to solve real business process problems. As part of their training, the participants are given real data and projects to work on while they are mentored by a master black belt.
