Iteration 1: Introduction to Disaster Recovery Management

Planning

We are in the age where risks critical to the operations of the businesses because of the system outages will always be. This has translated to concern to most of the organizations. Therefore, there is a need for disaster recovery planning and management to help in reducing the probability of a system being disrupted or reducing downtime when such a disruption happens. Being a researcher, I will introduce myself to the basics of disaster recovery management. In this first iteration where I will get introduced to the disaster recovery management, I will get the perspective of the ways in which IT disaster recovery planning perfectly fits within the overall organizational Business Continuity Program. During the iteration, I will look some of the procedures and policies that enable an organization to recover or continue with its important technology infrastructure and systems after the occurrence of a natural or human-induced disaster.

During the iteration, I will ensure that I have focused on the information technology and systems which support critical business functions within an organization. I will specifically learn ways in which an organization is able to keep its critical aspects of the business still functioning after a disastrous event has significantly disrupted them. The iteration will be very involving and there I will be required to be prepared thoroughly. Therefore, I will ensure that I have everything such as materials from which I will learn from and ways in which I will understand the content. In the same way, I will do extensive consultation thus ensuring that I have understood as much as possible. Additionally, I will try to make the learning as interesting as possible.

Action

I had already comprehensively planned on what I was going to do and how I was going to do it. Therefore, it did not take me long before I started immediately. However, before I started, I ensured that I had all the resources I needed to ensure the iteration was going to be successful. Additionally, I ensured that all resources from where I was to get information on disaster recovery management were reliable and that I was going to get as much as possible from the iteration. Having collected all the books, journals, and publications I needed for the iteration, I started immediately by further planning.

The first thing I did was trying as much as possible to comprehensively understand ways in which IT disaster recovery planning perfectly fits within the overall organizational Business Continuity Program. I could not understand this without going through books, journals, and the publications I had collected from the library. Additionally, I noted down everything that I needed to be clarified on for further consultation at the end of the iteration. Besides the books, journals, and publications, I tried to access more notes on the same from the Internet. The notes from the Internet enabled me to have a comprehensive understanding because they were presented in a way I could easily understand.

Having completed that, I moved to the rest of the items. At this time, I tried to understand procedures and policies employed in disaster recovery management comprehensively. Although they were many and could not easily understand them, I ensured that I had consulted an expert who shed more light on them. At the end of the iteration, I read and understood the rest of the items before I brought the iteration to an end. I noted what I had understood during the iteration.

Observation

According to the information, I read with regard to introduction to disaster recovery management; I made several observations. While trying to have a comprehensive understanding of the topic, I saw that disaster recovery planning and management developed because of the computer center managers recognizing that organizations largely depend on their computer systems. Many organizations could shut down if their computer systems went down and that is the current reason why organizations should have a disaster recovery planning and management. One thing I understood in details was that disaster recovery planning, and management is part of the greater business continuity plan. However, although it is part of this, it is one of the most important parts of the organization without which it would be difficult for them to continue operations in the event that a disaster will happen in the organization or in places where the systems are housed.

There many reliable resources from where one can read and understand disaster recovery management. Although I had not exhausted all the resources because of the time I had on hand, I was able to get a significant amount of information on disaster recovery management from the books, journals, and publications I had collected from the library. According to the observation, the Internet is also full of information about disaster recovery management. However, as much as one wanted to read and understand each and every detail, there was a need for consultation which I did after getting information which I needed from the resources I had. According to my observations, the expert was so knowledgeable in disaster recovery planning and management. This was to my advantage since through him I was able to understand so much about disaster recovery management comprehensively.

Reflection

I had always wanted to study and at the same time try to comprehensively understand disaster recovery planning and management. Looking at the ways in which I conducted the iteration, I can confidently say that I got almost everything I would have wanted as far as introduction to disaster recovery management and planning are concerned. As far as this iteration was concerned, I was first able to concentrate and focus on proposed meanings of the disaster recovery management. At the very juncture I looked at the biographical meaning of the same which was a laudable move was given that I had never learned disaster recovery management before. Additionally, I did not know whether I was going to succeed. However, given my determination and will to succeed, I saw it as an opportunity without which it would have been quite difficult to go through. Instead of just concentrating on what I was reading, I learned to critique and as why and how I would improve the knowledge.

When I look back at what I did in the iteration, it was a challenge at first. However, I was driven by the will to succeed. Although it was a challenge, I also challenged myself to go deep into the knowledge I was gaining and try to understand it as much as I could. Although this was my goal, I could not have succeeded doing it alone. This explains why I had to consult experts in the field of disaster recovery management and planning. Additionally, I would not have succeeded without the necessary learning materials and resources. This explains why I had to visit the library and collected the materials and resources from where I was going to read and understand disaster recovery management. Therefore, the iteration was successful and if I were to repeat it, I would do it in the similar way.
