Essential Steps For Exterior And Interior Surface Preparation Before Painting

Painters Brisbane go through a lot to achieve the desired results during painting projects. That is how they succeed in the business and make a name for themselves. We cannot overstate the importance of a new paint film of a well-chosen colour. This is what people will be looking at after the newly painted paint has dried. But if the new fresh look is to last, painters must not underestimate the necessity of proper preparation of the surface to be painted. We have listed surface preparation steps for both exterior and interior paint jobs in this article. The steps will not cover all the circumstances that painters can encounter during their painting project. We have only listed the common ones.

 Preparing the interior walls

 Wash the walls

If the walls are dirty, you can use household detergents to wash them. Use trisodium phosphate to clean grease from walls. If you are using powdered trisodium phosphate, always remember to rinse it off with clean water. Chlorine-based bleach can be used on mildew.

 Remove loose paint

You can use a spackle blade or a scraper to remove all the loose paint from the walls. Use sandpaper to sand down any rough ridges where the previous paint has broken off. If there are any cracks in the old paint, dig them out on both sides and form a V shape. This will increase the contact area for the patching material to hold on to.

 Seal cracks and holes

Do you know why reputed Painting Companies do a high-quality painting job? It is because they apply spackle to holes, cracks and heavy paint ridges. It is always better to apply two thin patch coats than a single thick coat. Using spackle that is too thick can shrink and crack as it dries.

 Primer application

The surface you are painting has to be clean no matter the type of surface you are painting. The surface should also be free of cracked and loose paint, oil, grease, rust scale, and chemical residue before applying the primer. The primary purposes of the undercoat and the primer are to seal the substrate to prevent the chemistry in the substrate from moving into and interfering with the chemistry of the final coat. Another purpose of the primer is to bind the finish coat to the surface that is being painted.

 Preparing the exterior walls

Before commencing any other work, you should start by checking for leaks and moisture getting into the substrate. Roof leaks, windows, gutters, and leaky plumbing should be repaired. Humid exterior rooms and damp basements are common sources of moisture so you should use dehumidifiers and vents if necessary. You can compromise the quality of the paint if you don’t eliminate the source of moisture.

Good Painters Brisbane should wash exterior surfaces to remove dirt, mildew and excessive chalking. Loose paint should be scraped off and all the cracks and holes repaired. Gaps around the door casings, windows and other places where materials meet such as the foundation line should be repaired.
