What is the history of switchblades?

Before discussing more about switchblades, let us understand a little about how they came into picture. The first switchblade was introduced somewhere in the mid of nineteenth century. They gained a wide popularity and became a pivotal part of the American culture soon thereafter. Their popularity soared higher when Hollywood characters started using them in movies and series.

How do switchblades work?

Switchblade knives follow a certain mechanism when it comes to opening. They are equipped with blades in their handles, which flip open on the press or push of a button or something similar. They basically have two versions entirely based on their mechanism of opening- ones that open sideways and others that open from the front.

Most of the switchblades, especially the ones that are quite common revolve around a pivot. When the knife is closed, blade experiences some kind of tension from the spring. Upon the completion, the tension is gradually released by the button that is present on the knife. When the user pushes the button, tension arises in the blade again. So, basically, just a push or press of the button can pop the blade of the knife, without putting a lot of effort in any way whatsoever.

Switchblades that open from the side are usually confused with traditional pocket knives, which shouldn’t be so as they are very different. Other switchblades, which open out on the front, are referred to as OTF switchblades. Their blade is usually sharper and are available in single and double action versions, depending on the way they open. The latter ones are better as they are user-friendly and safe as they do not open by accident.

Upshot

Both the versions of switchblades- side ones and open ones, come in a great variety of designs, finishes and sizes. If you are still not able to get your hands on the perfect one, don’t refrain from getting one customized.
