Ayurveda and Skincare

Ayurveda is a “science of life” that originated in India over 5000 years ago. The word is made up of two Sanskrit words; āyus which means life, and veda which means sacred knowledge, on which all the Ayurvedic products and treatments are based on.

In order to understand how to leverage Ayurveda for good skin, it is important to understand what causes your skin to breakout. According to Ayurveda, this happens due to the accumulation of Vata in the body.

But, what is Vata?

Vata governs all movement in the mind and body. It controls blood flow, elimination of wastes, breathing and the movement of thoughts across the mind. Since Pitta and Kapha cannot move without it, Vata is considered the leader of the three Ayurvedic Principles in the body. That is why it is very important to keep Vata in good balance.

This is important because when there is excess Vata in the body, we are prone to dry skin, aching joints, thinning dry hair, and brittle nails. So, the secret to staying young is keeping Vata at bay.

How you can keep your Vata at bay?

Here are some tips based on the ancient Ayurvedic sciences that will help keep your Vata in check and keep your skin beautiful:

  1. Pick the Right Veggies

You must include vegetables like lettuce, carrot, cucumber, daikon radish, cucumbers, carrots, asparagus, peas, green leafy vegetables, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, zucchini, and sweet potatoes to your regular diet. This is because the high-water content in these veggies makes them easy to digest while helping you purify your system internally. Be sure to consume them cooked and cook with Ghee for best results.

  1. Consume Lots of Nuts

Ayurveda propagates regular consumption of seeds and nuts in your diet. This is because nuts contain healthy nutrients like Omega-3s, healthy fats, and fibers.

  1. Hydration is Key

Since Vata is dry and cold by nature, you need to ensure you are well-hydrated and your skin is well-moisturized. For hydration, consume lots of water and fresh juices. You can also try warm herbal teas for their detoxifying properties.

  1. Moisturize for Good Skin

To ensure your skin is well-moisturized, use natural moisturizers or Ayurvedic skin care products. With the popularisation of Ayruveda, there are multiple products available in the market basis your skin type. So, if you have an oily skin type, simply look for the best Ayurvedic face wash and Ayurvedic face cream for oily skin. If you have a recurring pimple problem that needs immediate attention, you can also look for an Ayurvedic face wash for pimples specifically.

  1. Exercise

Not only is exercising is a great way to keep your mind and body active, but it also helps prevent accumulation of Vata. It helps improve your breathing, the blood circulation in your body, and gives your skin a healthy glow. You can also include meditation to your exercise regime for better results.
