Just 6 Steps to an Inspiring Educational Motivational Speech

Posted by Billy Riggs on March 28th, 2019

We asked a bunch of motivational speakers - Who is the toughest audience you have to deal with?

There was one answer soaring high - students.

High on life, rebellious, adult-in-head-but-treated-like-a-kid - why wouldn’t they be hard to crack?

If you are an Educational Motivational Speaker, you would completely understand every inch of what we are talking about here. The attention span of students is definitely slim and topped with the rebel attitude - it is a circus you don’t want to buy tickets to.

But, gear up, you are an educational motivational speaker. We bet you can find ways to get into those young minds and engage them in your speeches. A great speech isn’t just about quoting some fancy words. It is about the structure, timing, and message.

So, before you take your first yawn, let’s begin with 6 steps to an inspiring educational motivational speech.

1. Relatability

Who would you like to listen to?

a)Someone who empathizes with you.
b) Someone who tells you that your issues aren’t the end of the world.

Most of us would prefer listening to someone who empathizes with our problems, no matter how petty. That is human nature. The content you draft should be relatable with the students.

Giving a talk about exams? Tell them you have been there and know it is a stressful time.

Giving a talk about finding a career? Tell them you understand what they are going through.

Give them something to relate, something to laugh, and something to believe that everything will be fine.

2. Tell a story

Remember those days when going to bed meant listening to a dreamy bedtime story full of dreams and hopes?

Well, take them back to their childhood.

We are wired to respond better to stories than to recitations. Stories with happy endings instill hope while those with sad endings drive a fear, which keeps the motivation kicking.

Do you have any story from your childhood that the students could relate to? Or do you have any story which could motivate without boring them?

Work your speech around compelling and engaging stories. You could even start your speech with one to hold attention.

3. Don’t escape reality

The whole point of a motivational speech isn’t sending the audience into a fantasy world. But it is helping them find a way through the present circumstances.

You need to understand where they come from and draft a speech that gives them hope but also grounds them to reality.

4. Have a point

How many times have you given someone to talk and thought to yourself, “What was this person trying to say?”

We know you have a lot going in your head. You want to give them as much wisdom as possible in a small amount of time. But this would not work. Having too many messages creates the problem just like having none.

Have a point or two, dig deep into them, make them relatable, and deliver them in the most engaging way possible.

5. The structure

Just like a blog, a speech to needs to be connected. And that requires having a structure.

A good speech needs to have a beginning, a middle, and an impactful ending. It is also great to let the audience know what they can expect out of this talk. Give them an introduction to the main points and verbal cues.

This will also help you not get lost and the audience not get zoned out.

6. Leave them with something

It could be a question, it could be an impactful statement, or it could be a task.

Great speeches leave you with something to do. Your message needs to contain a purpose. The way you deliver should compel the listeners to associate themselves to that purpose.

Are you ready to draft and deliver a mind-blowing talk that doesn’t bore but instead keeps the students on the edge of their seats?
