Succulents and Cacti - Growing Tips

When cultivating the cactus it is necessary to take into account the two basic periods of the life of the plant, which is:

1. Period of vegetation (growth) and

2. Sleeping period (vegetation idle): a). summer standstill i b). winter hibernation.

1. Vegetation period (growth)

The period of vegetation (growth) generally lasts from April to October. However, each year is different. It should be kept in mind that cacti are-driven into growth by heat rather than watering. Only when the cacti in the spring are placed (exposed) for a long period in a warm and bright place, one "awakening" can be observed on them. on the top-dark plant, the spikes begin to get some glossy-they begin to grow and only then do we begin to sprinkle with a gentle rainwater and gradually switch to watering. First spring watering is good to do with hot rain temp. about 35-45 ° C (that can hold your hand in water). In the period of full growth we water once a week (plants in smaller pots) while 1-3 times a month larger plants in larger pots, that is, when we are sure that the soil in the pots is dried and that it continues to appear in a warm period. The period and intensity (amount of water) of watering depends on heat and light. The higher the heat and the light the earth in the pots will dry before it should be watered more often and more abundantly. It is best to fry early in the morning when plants, soil and the environment are cooled. By night cooling the plant should be dry. Never water when the plants, the soil and the environment are warmed up. We can catch our summer even late in the evening when we are sure that everything has already cooled down, but it is therefore imperative to water in the spring and fall only in the morning. When watering, it should be done less often (after drying the soil in the pots) abundantly and thoroughly, so that all the soil in the pots is soaked (when the collection of a smaller number of plants is best watered by dipping the pots in a bucket of water), and not often and a bit it may happen that only the earth gets halfway up the half of the pots and the bottom part always remains dry. The necessary watering experience is acquired over time, we learn to feel when it is to be watered and when not. Some cactus genera require regular watering, e.g. the genera Echinopsis, Gymnocalycium, Eriocereus, Notocactus, Melocactus, Epiphytic Cacti and others grow well when they have at least a humid earth. With so much succulent types out there make sure to ask yourself are succulents poisonous to cats. The other group of cacti from the deserts and semi-deserts does not tolerate the permanent moisture of the earth. If we flood in the storm, when the soil is still moist or if a cold period comes, such katuses usually result in root loss and even death of the plant. Especially sensitive cacti from the genera Copiapo, Echinomastus, Islaya, Sclerocactus, Pediocactus, Lophophora, Gymnocactus and others.
