Some of the Symptoms of Eye Problem in Children

Basically, after 12 to 16 weeks eyesight of babies begin improving and vision problems start between 18 months to 4 years. There are certain symptoms of eye problems in children which should not be overlooked:

Wandering eye: In this, an eye appears crossed with respect to the other eye. There is a misalignment of the eye so it seems that, that person is looking at another person. It is reported that 3% of children below 6 years have this problem. Early treatment of this is possible by appropriate eye exercises, especially if it is done before 2 years of age.

Dry Eyes: Nowadays dry eyes is becoming common even amongst children because they are spending more time in front of digital screens like laptop, tabs, smartphones, video games, etc. Nutritional deficiencies may also cause it. Symptoms of dry eyes are frequent blinking, redness, rubbing, blurred vision, etc. It can be treated by blocking the tear duct which prevents tears from draining from the eyes.

Red Eye Reflex: This is due to a problem in cornea, lens or vitreous chamber. The red reflex test is the best way to detect it but you can also detect it at home. When you click a picture of your child and if it emits a white or golden glow in that picture then you can make out its red reflex eye.

Astigmatism: Due to the improperly shaped lens or cornea a child is unable to clearly see the near and distant objects. This condition is known as astigmatism. When the front portion of the eye has physical defect it does not allow light to focus on retina results in blurred vision. It is recommended to wear glasses to overcome it.

Cataract: When the lens of the eyes is clouded it is a cataract. It obstructs light due to which a child cannot see properly and at times it may also lead to blindness. To treat this, surgery is to be done where intraocular lenses are applied removing the natural lenses.

Myopia and Hyperopia: Myopia is a condition in which the nearby objects appear clear, whereas there is a difficulty in seeing the far off objects. It usually occurs due to the lengthening of the eyeball from front to back and can be treated by using appropriate concave lenses.

Hyperopia is a condition in which there is a difficulty in seeing nearby objects. It usually occurs due to shortening of the eyeball from front to back and can be treated by using appropriate convex lenses.
