Multilayer PCB or single-sided&double-sided PCB?

PCB Classification

Printed circuit boards can be divided into three categories: single-sided board, double-sided and multilayer printed circuit boards according to the number of layers.

First is the single side board, On the most basic PCB, the parts are concentrated on one side and the wires are concentrated on the other. Because wires only appear on one side, this PCB is called a single-sided circuit board. Single-sided PCB is usually simple to manufacture and low cost, but the disadvantage is that it can not be applied to too complex products.

Double-sided PCB is the extension of single-sided PCB. When single-layer wiring can not meet the needs of electronic products, it is necessary to use double layer. Both sides have copper-clad wires, and through holes to connect the lines on the two layers, so as to form the required network connection.

Multilayer board is a printed circuit board with three or more conductive layers and insulating materials between them by lamination and separate layers are interconnected according to requirements. Multilayer circuit boards are the products of the development of electronic information technology towards high speed, multi-function, large capacity, small volume, thinning and lightweight.

Printed circuit boards can be divided into flex PCB (FPC), Rigid PCB and Flex-rigid PCB according to their characteristics.

How to distinguish multilayer PCB and single-layer or double sided PCB

1. Pick it up to the light, the inner core is opaque, that is, all of them are black, if so it’s multi-layer board. and single-sided boards, only have one layer of line, there is no copper in the hole. The double-sided boards have lines on both sides and copper in the holes.

2. Using micro-section can also be analyzed.

What products need PCB board?

In order to save space, make products lighter, more durable, and achieve good performance, it is necessary to use printed circuit boards. PCB meets the requirements of space, performance and reliability.

Not every appliance needs a circuit board. Simple appliances do not need circuits board such as motors. But electrical appliances with specific functions usually need circuit boards such as TV, radio, computer and so on. There are also PCB boards at the bottom of the cooker and governors in the fans.

Which products use double-sided boards and which products use multi-layer PCB boards ?

It mainly depends on if the double-layer board can meet the performance requirements, such as anti-interference ability, wiring, EMC requirements and other performance requirements. If the double-sided board can meet the requirements, there is no need to use multi-layer PCB.

Which is better, multi-layer circuit board or single-layer &double-sided circuit board?

Multilayer board is the most widely used PCB type in daily life. What are the advantages of the application of multi-layer PCB circuit boards?

Advantages of multi-layer PCB circuit board:

1. High assembly density, small size, light weight, meet the needs of electronic equipment light and miniaturization;
2. Because of the high assembly density, the connection between components (including components) is reduced, the installation is simple and the reliability is high.
3. Can increase the number of layers of wiring, thus increasing the design flexibility.
4. It can form a circuit with a certain impedance and form a high-speed transmission circuit.
5. Can build shielding layer and the heat dissipation layer to meet the special functional needs of shielding and heat dissipation.

With the continuous development of electronic technology and the continuous improvement of requirements for electronic equipment in computer, medical, aviation and other industries, PCB is developing in the direction of volume reduction, weight reduction and density increase. Due to the limitation of available space, it is impossible to further improve the assembly density of single-sided and double-sided PCBs. Therefore, it is necessary to consider using higher layers and higher assemble density multi-layer PCBs. Multilayer circuit boards have been widely used in the manufacture of electronic products because of their flexible design, stable and reliable electrical performance. UnikPCB now also provide multilayer PCB with superior economic performance.
