Earning the Favour of Goddess Saraswati

The daughter of Shiva and Durga she bestows eloquence in speech, wisdom and learning. Her image has her riding on a swan. She is also shown as dressed in white depicting her purity. She is shown to have four hands, these represent the four facets of human life, namely: intellect, wisdom, alertness and ego. She carries the scriptures in one hand, depicting supreme knowledge and plays the Veena with two other hands. Veena is said to be the instrument of love and life. She is also shown as riding the swan, which is yet again symbolic of purity and wise discrimination. The lotus that she holds in her hand is also a symbol of the epitome of wisdom.

Hinduism shows a lot through pictures, and symbolism plays a major role. Given unparalleled importance by the learned and erudite, her idol is worshipped with great love. But be it in the scriptures or in the lives of many, she is The One they turn to in their time of need, specially when they want a path cleared.
