Get in on the hanging garden trend with these easy to upcycle, coloured planters

Ever look at old utensils and wonder what to do with them? We have found a simple way to turn your old pots and pans into cheerful planters. You need to start by rummaging through the cabinets to find shapely pots (or ones with some texture) that you don’t use anymore. Perhaps the one thing you’ll need to practise is using the can of spray paint. Pick a couple of bright colours and try spray-painting a few rocks from your garden until you get the hang of it. If the kids are pitching in, you might need a bigger sheet of old tarpaulin or newspapers to spread out before you begin.

If you’ve been itching to get started on a serene hanging garden in your window or balcony, this is the most satisfying way. When you’re spraying the upturned pots, you’re working towards a smooth, lump-free first coat. This will set the base for an even second coat and give it a truly professional finish. Now, all you need to complete the project is some beautiful ferns like the Nephrolepis Exaltata commonly called the Boston fern or flowering plants like pansies that will make you happy every time you look at them. Rack in the compliments and show off your creative flair by sharing a picture and tagging us  on Instagram.

Supplies you’ll need:

-        Old kitchen pots
-        Acrylic spray paint in colours of choice
-        Jute string
-        Scissors

5 steps to a cool hanging planter
1.    Place the old pan upside down and spray-paint it with a colour of your choice. Let dry for half an hour and then apply another coat.
Let dry for an hour again.

2.    Wrap the string around the pot and cut a little bit extra. Cut two more strings of the same length.

3.    Knot all the three strings around the mouth of the pot.

4.    Take three more strings and loop them around one knot each. This will allow you to hang the planter.

5.    Pot the plant of your choice.

Your upcycled, colourful hanging planters are ready!
