Making Wood Exterior Doors Great Again

Your front door is the focal point of your home. When you look at any home your eye is naturally drawn directly to the front entrance door. It is the first feature you see and the first thing that you touch. Make it great. Don’t settle for a regular steel or fiberglass exterior door. Purchase a door you can be proud to call your own. Handcrafted wood exterior doors are a great way to add long lasting beauty, value and style to your home for generations to come. Wood doors naturally look superior, feel superior and sound like the real deal when they shut. There is no substitute for the touch and the feel of real solid wood.

  • Find an established manufacturer – Choose a seasoned and credible manufacturer of wood exterior doors, preferably a company that specializes in crafting uniquely designed products. Some of the best ones are passionate about fine craftsmanship and woodworking, so they create solid wood doors like they did in the olden days. This means each door is crafted one at a time rather than being mass produced, and created to last.
  • Ensure that the door is made of real wood – High-quality wood exterior doors are made of 100 percent real solid wood. This means the material must not be engineered or laminated, which are low-quality and may not last as long as real solid wood. These doors are a better investment in the long run and will add value to your property.
  • Get to know the different types of wood – The species and quality of the wood are factors that can make a difference in the overall appearance of your wood exterior doors. Some of the best materials to consider are mahogany, Spanish cedar, vertical grain fir, cherry, red oak, quartersawn white oak and mahogany. Select the right wood for your application.
  • Customize the door – Manufacturers may have an inventory of starting point deisgns which can be customized to suit your needs. Consider having your door built to order, with custom features, such as decorative glass, raised panel options, applied moldings. Have them make what you really want.
  • Compare products and prices – Just because one door is cheaper than the other, compare the products. Is it real solid wood or are they calling it solid wood and it is really a veneered or engineered stile and rail door? Most manufacturers do not make real solid wood doors today.
