Types of Mechanical Seals & their Benefits

Various industries heavily rely on pivoting hardware. Mechanical seals keep at bay any sort of spillage through shafts and leakages and hence must be chosen very carefully. Maintenance department or administrators must pay special attention to make sure mechanical seals are in good shape at all times.

Functions of Mechanical Seals

As you may know, mechanical seals are a kind of packing which is installed on a rotating machine’s power transmitting shaft. They are used for a variety of applications such as automobiles, rockets, ships, industrial plants and also residential equipment to name a few. They are placed to prevent any sort of liquid used by any machine from leaking to the external environ. The liquid could be oil or water. By preventing the liquid from leaking, mechanical seals curb environmental contamination and enhance power saving and machine’s performance.

Different Types of Mechanical Seals

There are a variety of mechanical seals manufactured by mechanical seal manufacturers in India. Each type of mechanical seal comes with its own set of advantages. For instance, Teflon bellow mechanical seal is used for extremely corrosive chemicals which includes strong oxidizing agents. These can handle the temperate ranging between -20 degree Celsius and 120 degree Celsius. That’s why each type of seal is used for specific applications.

1. Balanced & Unbalanced Mechanical Seals

Balanced mechanical seals are capable of handling a high amount of pressures and hence are better used when liquids contain low lubrication qualities. Unbalanced seals are also known for good performance when the vibration is quite high.

2. Pusher & Non-Pusher

A pusher-type seal has a primary sealing ring which is assembled with an ‘O’ ring and also springs. There can be one or multiple rings. On the other hand, a non-pusher seal contains a bellow assembly. Pusher seals are usually used in low-temperature conditions while non-pusher ones can be used in high-temperature conditions as well.

3. Conventional Mechanical Seals

Conventional mechanical seals are usually used for applications which were originally not designed with mechanical seals. The purpose of the conventional mechanical seal is mainly aimed at retrofits and pump upgrades.

4. Cartridge Type Mechanical Seals

Cartridge type mechanical seals consist of an entire sealing package which neatly fits inside the cartridge type housing. It provides the necessary static sealing to the stationary housing and the spinning shaft. Contemporary pump manufacturers have started providing these cartridge type mechanical seals into a new range of products as it facilitates hassle-free maintenance.
