The hybrid cars like Hyundai Kona, Mahindra e-Verito, Toyota Camry and BMW i8 lead the segment today. Mahindra e-Verito

Mahindra e-Verito has entered productions as an electric version of the Verito sedan. The car derives power from the latest drivetrain technology. The totally electric car with zero emission is available in just a few cities like Chandigarh, Bangalore, New Delhi, Pune, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Jaipur and Nagpur. The car comes in 3 variants - D2, D4 and D6. The prices vary from Rs. 9.5 lakh to Rs. 10 lakh. A 3-phase 72V induction motor powers the e-Verito, producing a power output of 91 Nm of torque and 30.5 kW of power. There is a 200 Ah Li-ion battery that powers the music system, AC and the headlamps. The car can travel up to 110 km with a full charge.

BMW i8

By announcing the i division of electric vehicles and hybrid cars in early 2011, BMW had stunned the world. The i3 came out as a pure electric car and i8 was a plug-in hybrid. The automaker unveiled the i8 plug-in hybrid during the 2014 Auto Expo. The car went on sale in the Indian market since February of 2015 and is available only in one variant. The i8 reminds of the 8 series of cars that could be found in the early 80s and 90s. The car has a low slung body style, large hood and stubby back. It has a low side profile and is characterised by scissor doors. The rear end of the car breathes into the futuristic appearance of the car. The car derives power from a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder twin-scroll turbo engine.

Hyundai Kona

Hyundai says that the Kona Electric would be the first real electric SUV in India. The electric version is going to be launched on July 9. The Kona EV would be introduced in India through the CKD route and be locally assembled at the Chennai facility. It has been reported that the automaker would be bringing 1000 units of the Kona Electric to India, to begin with. The electric version would get subtle updates like a charging port, a new front grille and a revised rear bumper. The car would be available in two powertrain options.

Toyota Camry

The latest Toyota Camry launched in India costs you around Rs. 36.95 lakh. Only the hybrid variant is available now as the petrol option is no more sold. Toyota has surprised everyone as the recent model costs Rs. 27,000 lower than the older one. The Toyota Camry has definitely grown in proportions and has got an upgrade on the interiors. The electrically adjustable seats have memory function. There is a rear armrest, 3-zone climate control and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
