I think if you are suffering from PCOS the knowledge about the condition and what treatments you require is very important.

 What really is PCOS?

Let’s first understand what poly cystic ovarian Syndrome is all about. Tough it is mostly prevalent   in women but mostly women are not aware of it and living with it.

Only 1 out of 10 women know what the disease is all about.

PCOS is the most common abnormal function of ovaries in women at the time of periods or before menopause arrives .lot of women have poly cystic ovaries but all are not aware of it as they don’t show any symptoms but only 10 percent of women show symptoms

Even my mother and grandmother had this problem but till now nobody knows the exact cause and maybe I have inherited from them. I went to gynaecologist a number of times and took a cocktail of medicines since my early adulthood days but turned out a classic case of PCOS.

How did I come to know if I had this syndrome?

When our body is showing two or more sign and symptoms then it is called a syndrome.

No ovulation for a long period of time thus missing menstrual cycle. My face was getting too oily and acne on my face or increase of facial hair.

This is all because of surplus number of male hormones in women body and increase number of cysts on the ovaries.

Our pituitary gland secretes two hormones luteinising hormone (LH) and Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) the imbalance of these two hormones prevent the follicle in the ovary from developing properly .they don’t mature to release an egg thus giving rise to many follicles on the ovaries thus giving its name as poly cystic ovaries.

But what changes did you see in your body ?

My weight was increasing which was giving me stress and weight gain was around my waist and not able to reduce after so much struggles also. It was becoming a big hurdle in my life.

It is seen that it has become a common problem among women but only very few  are aware of it.

If you have PCOS you are more likely to suffer depression, Sleep apnea, sudden mood changes, getting irritated easily which were occurring due to hormonal imbalance in your body.

Another change what I was seeing was abnormal eating habits to balance my emotional stress which I was going through.

I was also going through increased sugar levels means high level of insulin in the body which lead to weight gain and Inflammation in my body.

One of the functions of insulin is to take glucose to the cells to release energy and if you get resistant to insulin you feel tired as the cells can’t utilise glucose in the blood thus giving rise to diabetes.

So then I understood insulin resistance was the root cause of many symptoms as insulin levels also lead to increase in testosterone which leads to irregular periods and growth of facial hair which is called hirsutism one of the depressing side effects.

But I have heard it’s also called as Syndrome , how?

Syndrome means when group of conditions occur together which I was going through obesity, hypertension, high levels of blood sugar, increased levels of harmful fats .So diagnosis was made when my body showed 3 or more symptoms which was making my doctor confuse at first place.

Increase in fatty tissue around abdomen, High triglyceride, when body can’t use insulin properly.

Are you enjoying a good sleep ?

Sound sleep is very important for a sound body and mind but women with PCOS  specifically when they are overweight  get sleep disorder breathing ,  again  this adds up to frustration and stress in the body.

How  did i come out of this stressful disease and fix the root cause

After going through so much health issues I understood that this disease doesn’t have any cure only thing was to make changes in your daily routine with changing eating habits.

First to change about was how to improve the insulin sensitivity which was creating a big havoc in my life. I was suggested to improve my physical activity and avoid sedentary life style.

I was asked to eat variety of diet which involved all the vitamins and minerals. And improved eating pattern.

I was asked to eat good fats avoid eating saturated fat try to be positive to come out of the stress levels.

I was suggested to increase calcium intake along with vitamin D in my diet

If you are looking for weight loss the aim for reduced calories intake with a modification.

PCOS  is a big deal if you don’t get it treated

You may have abnormal uterine bleeding due to lack of ovulation

You may go through depression and eating disorder and mood disturbance

It can lead to Infertility, miscarriage or premature birth due to elevated testosterone levels or you may end up with endometrial cancer also

Do you think if I add exercise in my daily regime it will help me?

Yes why not it’s a fantastic idea.

Firstly exercise will help you to lose weight and get rid of extra pounds

Improve your lean body mass

Better insulin sensitivity

Your blood pressure will be normal thus it will improve mental health and relax our mind

If you are planning for a baby

They need to focus on

Rectifying the abnormal hormonal levels in your body

Maintain weight and improving physical activity

Maintaining normal sugar levels

What changes can you bring within your body to  get wonderful results

First is to treat yourself in a very kind way, as you are going through  so much stress, depression and anxiety , start with small changes like taking support from people who understands what is  going on in your life

Start with small changes which can be added in your lifestyle easily and you can maintain it for long term

Set small goals and reward yourself which will keep you motivated.

Write notes of daily what you have been doing the whole day. Include what mood changes and what changes are required.

Thus pay attention to your daily activities like what time are you eating, your levels of exercise, small support from your family, friends, trainers and dieticians.

To come out of this disease we need to take whole body and mind altogether rather each symptom as a separately.
