Easy Memorization Techniques for Students

When exam time is just around the corner students wonder how they can memorise things. Students need to understand that instead of studying things verbatim it is important to understand the subject properly.

If students study on a regular basis then naturally they will not feel any pressure when the examination is just around the corner. But there are some things that the students have to memorise. So here are some memorization techniques for students.

No room for clutter and distractions:

It is important that if you want to learn things properly then the environment in which you are studying is important. Make sure that there is no clutter in the room where you are going to study. It is also important that there are no distractions in that room like loud music or television etc.

Use the method of Loci:

Lociis a Latin word and it means places. This is one of the memorization techniques for students. In this case, visualisation is used for memory enhancement. It is like visualising a closet with many drawers and you place certain information in a particular drawer. When you need to remember that piece of information you have to open that drawer.

Use Acronyms to remember a list of things:

Sometimes you have to remember a long list. For this, you can make use of acronyms. Let us take a simple example. In order to remember the names of planets in our solar system you just remember the phrase “My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Us Nine Pizzas”. The first letter of each word is the starting letter of a planet (Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Pluto).

Image and name combinations can be helpful:

If you want to remember names then one of the best memorization techniques for students is associating it with images. When you associate a name with an image it becomes easier to recall the names.

Story-telling technique:

One more way of remembering important things in studies is by using a story-telling technique. You can associate a certain phenomenon or principle with a particular story. This will make it easier for you to recollect the details about that phenomenon or principle.

Use your acting skills:

Acting can be one of the memorization techniques for students. When we enact a certain situation it becomes easy to recollect the same. Hence we must make use of our acting potential in order to memorise things better.

Different locations can help:

Sometimes studying in the same place can be boring and due to this you may not be able to memorise things. Here is a simple solution to this problem. You can try sitting in different locations. You can sit in the garden in the morning and then next you can try out sitting in the terrace. Different locations will help you memorise things better.

Revision is a must:

You have to keep revising things if you want to remember things better. Revision will make things easier for you. You need to just keep in mind if you have forgotten something and then try to recollect the same during your revision session.

Writing can help:

One of the best ways to memorise things is by writing. Just write down things that you have learned a few days back. This will help you understand how much you can recollect. It will also give you a fair idea about the things that you have forgotten. You can review the things that you have forgotten during the review sessions. One very important thing to remember here is that you must write down the things and not type. This is because writing is a physical act that can help in stimulating the cells at the base of the brain. As a result, the brain will become more attentive. The brain will be more active when you write each letter with your hand.

Teach someone:

One of the best ways to learn something better is by sharing. So try to teach someone. When you try to teach someone else your concepts will also become clearer. When you explain things to someone else you get a better understanding of where you stand.

These are some of the memory techniques that you can try. But what one needs to understand here is that studying means understanding things. Once you understand the things better it will become easier for you to learn the concepts better. Once your concepts and basic principles are clear then preparing for the exam becomes much easier.

No one has a photographic memory and it is also very difficult to know how to learn things in the best possible way. But the memory techniques can surely be helpful. You may try a combination of different techniques for better results.
