The evolution of Freemasonry

The Freemasonry evolved from the teachings and practices of a fraternal organization that organized lodges of operative Masons during the middle ages. Later, it came out with the entrance of layman members known as the ‘Free and Accepted Masons’. It is also said that the Freemasonry originated from the guilds of stonemasons and cathedral builders that accepted ‘only men’ to form a better society. From these lodges, the first Grand Lodge, an association of lodges, was founded in England.

Early Masonic sources

The earliest masonic texts contained the history of the craft or mystery of the masonry. The oldest known work is The Halliwell Manuscript, or Regius Poem, dated between 1390 and 1425. The document has a brief history in the introduction and it mentioned about the ‘craft of masonry’ that began with Euclid in Egypt and came into England during the reign of King Athelstan. Later, the Cooke Manuscript traced masonry to Jabal son of Lamech which are found in the old testament of the Bible and told how this knowledge came to Euclid, from him to the Children of Israel and so on through an elaborate path to Athelstan.
