Issues with Hilux 1KDFTV Turbocharger Electric Actuator Stepper Motors

Save money by reading the following....

The Toyota Hilux (as well as Land Cruiser Prado) have VNT geometry and use an electric stepper motor instead of a vacuum traditional waste gate with dumping port.

The electric stepping actuator on the turbocharger moves the VNT (vanes) in the turbine housing. This allows gasses to build up or be released (as in the traditional dump).

The stepping motor can be swapped-out as it is a separate part to the turbo. This is not common knowlege as OEM manufacturers such as Toyota will only sell the entire unit as 1 part.
So if you have an issue with your Hilux 1KDFTV Turbocharger Electric Actuator Stepper Motors, you can opt to ONLY swap-out the actuator, saving you many hundreds of dollars.

Do you have a Stepping Motor Fault?

Check first for any physical signs of issues with entire turbo assembly.
Typically these could include leaks, unusual noises or low power. Check for 'play' in the impellor as this will show if there is excessive movement from degrading internals such as bearings.

Usually if the issue is just about lack of power, without typical physical symptoms, the issue is more likely to reside in the electronic actuator. And quite often in such cases a light will illuminate on the dash indicating a fault has been registered by the vehicle's ECU.
In such cases, have an autoelectrician scan the ECU to look for a code specific to stepping motors.

And, in finding a code related to the stepper only, have it removed and replaced. No need to replace the ENTIRE turbocharger assembly!.

This is the most efficient resolution, as the turbo doesn't even need to be taken off the vehicle (save on mechanic labour costs), and less money spent by just acquiring and swapping out the old electronic actuator

Easy, simple - save money and time.
