uPVC Versus Wooden Windows – Which Solution Offers Superior Value?

Experts at Heriot-Watt University’s Institute of Building and Urban Design have established that timber frames have a considerably lower cost over their lifespan than uPVC equivalents. This is partly down to the fact that timber frames have a drastically longer lifespan, as demonstrated in an earlier study, meaning that timber frames manufactured to accepted industry standards don’t require repairs or replacement as often. Put simply, uPVC windows look cheaper at first glance, but timber frames are a superior investment in the long run.

The study covered three types of wooden windowsand contrasted them with uPVC alternatives. Taking samples of timber, modified timber and aluminium-clad timber, the frames were put to the test in three condition types to examine the effects of environmental conditions: mild, moderate and severe. For now, the majority of suburban UK households are subject to mild conditions, while high-rise and coastal housing usually must handle more severe weather. The study found that timber frames of all varieties outperformed uPVC frames in the milder conditions.

By contrast, in severe conditions the aluminium-clad timber frames were the top performer. Interestingly, all the wooden windows turned out to be superior value than the uPVC equivalent. The study was conducted out on a 1230 x 1480mm double-glazed, A-rated white casement window with a single opening light. Costs were based around contract prices. Evidently, wooden windows have undergone significant improvement in the last few years that make them more durable and long-lasting. Of course, wood was once a living material - so when installed you’ll have to make sure they’re adequately maintained by painting, staining or treating the frames - they’re undeniably vulnerable to weathering and warping. uPVC windows have even greater drawbacks when it comes to aesthetics though. Some products successfully replicate the appearance of timber, but you’re usually better off opting for actual timber. If you’re looking to replace old wooden windows on a limited budget, then uPVC is the ideal – but in most other cases timber is now the obvious choice.
