Christian Orphanage Started by Late Reverend Richard Wurmbrand and his Wife Sabi

Recently a personal friend of Michael Wurmbrand visited and brought much-needed help to the Agape Orphanage in Pascani, Romania. This American Christian can fly for free due to his family having worked for a major airline. The orphanage got its nickname of the Wurmbrand orphanage because it was founded and helped since 1993 by the Wurmbrand's.

When started, late Reverend Richard Wurmbrand and his wife Sabina were surrounded by leaders of American and West European Christian organizations commanding lots of money and promises were great to continue to support this orphanage. In time both Reverend Richard Wurmbrand and his wife Sabina Wurmbrand died and all these leaders disappeared as well and even those still alive withdrew from keeping their representations. When there is time and distance between parties partnering for a project, it is normal there should be misunderstandings especially when the partners are not equal as to the means and ultimate goal of what should be accomplished.

At the time there were droves of orphans in Romania, a country just escaped from communism. 200,000 for a population of 20 million, thus 1 percent. For comparison, in the United States at a population of over 435 million, there are about 120,000 orphans. Reverend Richard Wurmbrand and the local Christians active in the orphanage thought this will be ongoing Christian work for many years to come, so in time they felt assured they could take in more orphans. This was their lifelong dedication. The Western Christian leaders who participated in the opening of the orphanage, with some publicity and pomp, imagined they are obliged to support these initial 56 orphans until they are 18 and then they can wash their hands of any obligations.

Meantime the financial needs of the orphanage also changed substantially. The expenses in 1993 were just the US ,500/month and nowadays they are ,000-,000 per month for only 36 orphans. Why? Romania entered the European Union; the status of an orphanage has changed legally. Tremendous inflation intervened. Prices shot up at the European Union level. They have to have a medical cabinet fully staffed, a full-time psychologist, etc. The Voice of the Martyrs(VOM) failed to support this orphanage as soon as the Wurmbrand couple died  and used at least million raised in a great part with the sad history of the Wurmbrand family persecution under communism, to help finance the construction industry in Oklahoma, to build itself opulent headquarters and make a substantial loan to a 3rd degree felon, named vice-president.  You may read athttp://wurmbrandmichael.com Michael Wurmbrand’s sad letter about VOM.

Our example in the Parable of the Good Samaritan is the keeper of the inn. All characters in this parable come and go. The keeper of the inn ends up with a moribund in his care having faith in a promise of the Good Samaritan that he shall return, an example of our faith in our Lord’s return. In his bestseller “The Wurmbrand Letters” Richard Wurmbrand’s emphasized that the best contract is the character of a person. He was right. This orphanage should have been started with a complex international written contract, so promises of all those present would be kept.

The Gospel explains how at the rich man’s gate was laying poor beggar Lazarus. Should beggar Lazarus knock hard on the gate to be noticed? Shouldn’t the rich man take a keen interest in helping poor Lazarus without being constantly prodded to help? The Richard Wurmbrand Foundation tries to be of help to such orphans.
