Turning 50 might mean that you need to get screened for colorectal cancer. Although screening is important, the number of times you are screened depends on your age. It is not surprising that many doctors are recommending screening, which is good, but frequent colon screening for persons aged 51 to 79 may not be necessary. The decision should be based on facts regarding the pros and cons of screenings.

While some practitioners in the medical field disagree with regular screenings, the general consensus is that it is good and should be practiced. This consensus was reached after studies showed that colon cancer screening is effective in reducing colon cancer incidences.

The debate on whether to screen or not to screen is one still ongoing, however, early detection of colon cancer through regular screenings can be beneficial in providing timely treatment. The process involves the analysis of fecal samples, visual observation and having a colonoscopy done. The process is safe but can be intrusive and may cause bleeding and tearing in the bowel.

Researchers justify these effects by balancing the benefits with the negative effects and have found that the good outweighs the bad showing that regular screening is good. This research has cemented doctors’ recommendations to have regular screenings for persons over 50 years.
