Use, Side-Effects and Benefits of Sildenafil

Sildenafil relaxes or dilutes muscles of the blood vessels which in turn increases blood flow to a particular area of the body. Sildenafil under the brand name Viagra is used by men for treating erectile dysfunction. Also known as impotence, it refers to an inability to either get or maintain an erection for satisfactory sexual intercourse.

Another brand of sildenafil is Revatio, which is used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension. It enhances your ability to exercise for a longer period of time.  It is advised that Viagra should not be taken if you are also taking Revatio. Mediseller a recognised Sildenafil supplier & exporter

Please be aware

Stay away from sildenafil if you are also using a nitrate drug such as nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate, isosorbide mononitrate, etc. for chest pain or heart problems. Viagra is also to be avoided if you are taking recreational drugs such as "poppers".  Sildenafil, when taken with nitrate drugs, can prove to be fatal as it can cause a sudden and sharp decrease in your blood pressure.

Some medicines such as riociguat can cause adverse or dangerous side effects when taken alongside sildenafil. Your doctor must be aware of what medications you are currently taking.

Seek immediate medical help if your erection post taking of Viagra lasts for more than 4 hours or if it causes acute discomfort. A prolonged erection, known as priapism can harm the penis. Additionally, you need to immediately cease taking the drug if you feel that your vision is being impaired.

Be cautious while taking this medicine

You should not take sildenafil if you are allergic to the medicine or using drugs such as riociguat (Adempas) to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension. Also, as mentioned above, the sildenafil should not be taken along with nitrate drugs. Also, note that recreational drugs such as poppers also contain traces of nitrate.

To ensure that there are no adverse side effects because of taking this drug, you need to inform your doctor if you have ever had:

  • Heart problems such as pain in the chest, heart rhythm disorder, heart attack, etc.
  • High or low blood pressure;
  • Blood circulation problems;
  • Retinitis pigmentosa (an inherited condition of the eye);
  • Blindness in one or both eyes;
  • bleeding problems;
  • Stomach ulcer;
  • Pulmonary Veno-occlusive disease (PVOD);
  • Liver or kidney disease;
  • Blood cell disorder such as sickle cell anaemia, multiple myeloma, or leukaemia;
  • Physical deformity of the penis (such as Peyronie's disease); or
  • If you have been asked to refrain from sexual intercourse for health reasons.

Sildenafil and vision loss

This drug can cause sudden vision loss by cutting blood supply to the optic nerve. A few such incidents of sudden vision loss have been reported in people who also had heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, or certain pre-existing eye problems. However, it has not been conclusively proved that the sudden vision loss was directly the result of taking this medicine.

No untoward pregnancy-related issue has been found with this medicine. However, you need to inform your doctor in advance if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant in the near future.  It is advised that women with pulmonary arterial hypertension should continue with the medicine unless the doctor advises them to stop taking it.
