How to Change WiFi Name

Posted by Piotr on December 12th, 2019

When you buy a Wi-Fi router, you may find that there are so many Wi-Fi networks with identical names just next to each other. The good news is that regardless of the brand of Wi-Fi router you are using, you can change the Wi-Fi name and even the password if you wanted to. Unfortunately, many users don’t know how to change not only the default identical Wi-Fi network name but also the default Wi-Fi password thus compromising the safety of their Wi-Fi network.

Change WiFi Name

The name of your Wi-Fi network is also known as the SSID or Service Set Identifier and as you can tell, it is a unique name given to identify your network and is different from other Wi-Fi networks.

Here is how you can change your Wi-Fi name:

  • Start by entering your router’s IP address into your favorite web browser.
  • Once you have done that, log in as the administrator
  • For the third step, go to the settings tab and look for an option titled Wi-Fi name or SSID
  • Delete the old name and enter your new Wi-Fi name

With that set, you can verify the change of your Wi-Fi name using NetSpot which is a reliable Wi-Fi analyzer for windows and mac OS computers.

Yes, you may have made the decision to change your Wi-Fi name and you have known how to do that. However, it is not every Wi-Fi name that is suitable for your network. You’ve probably come across some very funny Wi-Fi names like “hack me” and many more. You can tell from these names that people believe that Wi-Fi names don’t matter so much. While it is true that Wi-Fi names are not as important as having a strong Wi-Fi password, a good Wi-Fi name makes a huge difference.

So, how do you go about choosing a Wi-Fi name when you have decide to change it?

1. Avoid giving away any personal information

A Wi-Fi name with personal information is readily identifiable. If your neighbors know your name, they can easily identify that Wi-Fi network as yours. This places you at great risk of targeted attacks. Do you know that you don’t need to be tech savvy to interfere with someone’s internet connection? A person can simply download a software application from the internet. So don’t go all out using your personal name for your Wi-Fi name.

2. A public hotspot? I don’t think so

It is interesting to find people who like naming their Wi-Fi network after public places like MacDonald’s and the rest. Well, using a fake name may make it difficult for your neighbors to identify your network but it will slow down your download and upload speeds because everybody in your vicinity would be trying to connect to the network.

3. Common use is a must

As you change your Wi-Fi name, remember to use common sense. Use names that are both sensible and inspirational.

The best names for your Wi-Fi network are those that you come up with yourself. As you change your Wi-Fi name, remember not to be either overly ambitious or way too plain. Lastly, make use of the NetSpot Wi-Fi analyzer for the best results.
